Professional Organization Research Being a personal fitness trainer is a very passion driven career. Your paycheck is based on your commission. There is little to no hourly wage associated with working at a gym. I have thought about becoming a personal trainer on the side in the past because your work schedule is ultimately up to whenever you can take clients. Clients are looking for someone who can be committed to them and their goals, and help instill good habits or develop already existent habits. I think a trait all personal trainers should include is the hunger to learn from each client to become a healthier individual, as well as gain experience to help with any client they may take on. I knew a little bit about the certification process. There is a moderate demand for trainers because several smaller and some large gyms are opening new facilities nationwide. Even though there is a growth, the wages are not increasing. The base rate for a course to become a trainer is anywhere from $400 to $800. There are several other options that include things such as private consultations with experts, extra study material for the certification exam, and options to retake the test. These options can run up to $1000. I did learn that paying almost double the price for the exam is not worth it due to the enormous wealth of resources gyms provide in training or on the internet. Passing the certification exam does not mark the end of your learning within this field. Some companies have their own exam they require employees to pass even with their certification. As I previously mentioned, the outlook for this career is moderately high, but salaries don’t appear to be increasing. The main way to increase your salary in this field is with experience and to further your education. Often, college students study within the health and nutrition field before getting their certification. This sometimes earns them more initially but they should not expect to go up in salary without moving up the ladder, whether it be within a company or going to a larger
