Performance Enhancing Drug Use in Sports An anabolic steroid is a natural and synthetic substance that helps build muscle mass, gives athletes the ability to work more vigorously, and gives the athletes body the ability the easily recover from an injury (CNN 2). The most popular performance enhancing drugs is the generic anabolic steroids (ESPN 1). The use of these types of performance enhancing drugs go back all the way to 776 B.C., around the time of the very first Olympic games (Timeline 1). Around that time, the athletes used things such as mushrooms, plants and herbs, and other mixtures to give them an edge on the competition (Baron 3). A great number of athletes that have been successful in their sports have later been caught for using performance-enhancing drugs throughout their career. Performance enhancing drugs are said to have an abundance of harmful effects. It is ultimately up to the athlete to make the choice to use them or not; however, it has become a new evolution in sports. These drugs have become a very controversial issue in the sports world today, and it need to be abolished. A performance enhancing drug is any substance taken by an athletes to improve their performance and get an unfair advantage on the competition. Performance enhancing drugs do not need to be used. These drugs are not important enough to ruin your whole life over. They are extremely dangerous, and do very harmful things to the human body and brain. These steroids do not have a short-term effect on the brain, but they do have long-term effects. Steroids affect some chemicals in the brain pathways as well that can damage the brain forever. Performance enhancing drugs are extremely harmful to the body, and any athlete that accepts doing that to their body is not very smart. Performance enhancing drugs need to be out of
Steroid use in professional sports is unfair and unsafe because of its use and many side effects. Steroids physically enhance an athlete’s body to an extraordinary point, which a non-user cannot reach. Professional leagues may or may not test for use of steroids, which can also be unfair to the athletes. Athletes use steroids to increase muscle mass, strength, and power that will improve their performance in playing their sport. The side effects of this drug can be harmful to the user and others around them.
Abstract: Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always looked for some kind of edge over their competitors. They will do whatever it takes to be one of the elite, and that includes injecting supplements into their bodies to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Steroid use is probably one of the most common drug misuses in sports competition. Athletes found that with anabolic steroids, one could become a better athlete twice as fast. Not until 1975 was the drug first banned from Olympic competition because of the health risks it produced.
There are also many types of Anabolic steroids, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, dehydroean drosterone, clostebol, and nandrolone (Szumski 13). The anabolic steroids other name can be “dual personality drug” because it makes a person basically bi-polar (Dolan 23). Weight lifters were some of the first athletes to use steroids, but there was still no guarantee it would work (Dolan 25). Sports players suffer career crushing blows that the person uses performance-enhancing drugs to get back in the game (Dolan 55). Amphetamines could be obtained legitimately to outside sources including the black market (Dolan 58).
Performance enhancing drugs are not fair in sports. First off, they are a form of cheating. Most athletes work in the weight room and sacrifice their time. They work hard to use their natural talents and abilities, PED’s give the players an undeserved and unfair edge over his or her peers. “It is not fair to those that are naturally talented or work hard to remain in shape for another to come in and take the spotlight because they have decided to take the easy route” says a individual from Debate.Org. Along with giving the player a trump card, so to speak, it gives the whole team an advantage. Therefore, the whole team or organization is now cheating! “Hard workouts can not have the same benefits as PED’s, this makes the users have an advantage.”
In all areas of sports, professional, college, and even high school, there is widespread illegal use of performance-enhancing drugs. Although there are many reasons for athletes to choose to use these drugs, the cost of such use, both to the athlete and to society can be extraordinarily high. It is important to understand why performance-enhancing drugs are used and what are the consequences of their use to the athlete and society.
Each day, professional and amateur athletes and body builders thrive to achieve their goals and dreams of winning gold medals or representing their country worldwide. The sports or games in which they participate require physical strength, athleticism and stamina, and due to the tough competition they face, some of these athletes decide to take performance enhancing drugs, an act called doping.
Performance enhancing drugs, many think they are illegal substances that athletes use to perform better in their professional sport however; they can be used for medical reasons. One form of performance enhancing drugs that can be beneficial to the medical field is Anabolic steroids: “The main legitimate use of these dr...
Anabolic steroids are drugs containing, or hormone-like substances, that are used to increase strength and promote muscle growth. They were first developed in the 1930s in Europe to treat undernourished patients and to promote healing after surgery. Competitive weightlifters began using steroids in the 1950s as a way to increase their athletic performance. Use gradually spread throughout the world among athletes in other has been estimated that at least one in 15 male high school seniors in the United States--more than a half-million boys--has used steroids. Some are athletes attempting to increase their strength and size; others are simply youths attempting to speed up their growth to keep pace with their peers. In some countries, anabolic steroids are available over the counter. In the United States, a doctor's prescription is necessary.
As the use of performance enhancing drugs is becoming more popular amongst athletes, many of them do not understand the risks involved in taking these drugs. Many people are looking for a quick way to build muscles, or to get stronger the fastest way possible. Using these performance aids may very well be a quick fix for many athletes, but taking the drugs is unethical and dangerous. Using special drugs to boost an athlete’s performance is degrading to sports and to the athlete, but after they stop using the drugs and lose some strength, you become trapped in the steroid cycle.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says that if a substance can make your strength, power, speed, or endurance better it’s a performance-enhancing drug. (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2005) Performance enhancing drugs can be grouped into four categories. (Steve Olivier, 1996) A. A performance-enhancing drug can be described as stimulants such as amphetamines, caffeine, and cocaine.

Many athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs, or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition dates back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher, and recover at an increased pace.
Hundreds of professional athletes across the world have been accused of taking performance enhancing drugs. The use of performance-enhancing drugs by professional athletes, or "doping", has been acknowledged as a problem since at least the 1960s. The first use of performance-enhancing drugs has been traced back to the first Olympics in Greece. Scandinavian mythology says Berserkers could drink a concoction prepared from a mushroom, to increase their physical power a dozen times. “We have to make some radical move to get the attention of everyone. Cheaters can't win and steroids have put us in the position that it's OK to cheat.” (Lou Brock, 2009) This quote describes how almost every professional player feels when they know that their opponents are cheating. Performance enhancing drugs should be banned and players should be punished more harshly because it leads to numerous diseases, young athletes would be tempted to take it, and players would be unpredictable and can cause.
The debate over the legalization of performance-enhancing drugs, also known as PEDs, has been on the rise. Performance enhancing drugs are the illegal drugs or substances that are taken by athletes to improve their performance. The term doping is used to describe the act of using PEDs. In the recent years, many famous athletes have been convicted of PED abuse. Among these famous athletes is Lance Armstrong, a famous cyclist who won multiple Tour de France titles.
Overall it is clear that the need to use performance enhancing drugs is outweighed by the consequences and issues caused by performance enhancing drugs. Sporting events such as the world cup, the Olympics or the World Series make young children feel inspired and encouraged about what they could achieve through dedication and hard work. I feel it is important for the sporting industry as well as the athletes to return respectability to the sport. By
