Perfection, as defined by the state of flawlessness and the insatiable desire for excellence, has always been in existence in humankind. From the age-old event of the Tower of Babel where people had the yearning of reaching the heaven to be on equal terms with God by building lofty tower, to the climbing of the corporate ladder in the working world in order to achieve respectable positions in the modern society. These are few examples that demonstrate the perfectionistic nature of humans. The desire to improve oneself is, thus, existent, and is especially becoming more so in this day and age where it has been deemed as a necessity and has also been widely embraced in the society in order to improve lives, as a result of modernisation. In addition, there are various aspects which further epitomise the perfectionistic state, by the society’s expectations, media influences, and even sports.

As humans they were often taught from their very young age by both their families and schools to strive for their best in all that they do and that failure should be avoided as much as possible. And as they grow older when they have to make life’s decisions, they often strive towards their ambitions and even have a certain framework of what their desired life partners would be like. In society, there are also certain careers which are often valued as prestigious such as lawyers and doctors, while other jobs may be deemed as inferior. Other expectations of job recruitments are also made known by the recruiters as they have their own requirements in order to hire the most suitable candidate. ...ix solution of winning the coveted title. Even renowned professional cyclist, Lance Armstrong, has blatantly admitted to this practice. It just shows the innate impetus and competitiveness in human beings that many really crave to be the best.

As shown in the various aspects of life, it seems true that many people are obsessed with perfection because it could be the only way for the progress of society and having the thought achieving their hopes and dreams just reflects very much on the perfectionistic nature of human beings. However, one should also consider whether perfection will stand in the long run, and how often has one considered that gaining the whole world is unattainable? Striving for perfection and aiming to be the best may not be the same. It is just a matter of knowing the limitations as mere mortals and acknowledging that even the best fall sometimes
