Perceval
In the story Perceval edited by Roger Sherman Loomis and Laura Hibbard Loomis, Perceval the main character has many adventures, in which he learns many lessons about life.
The story starts out with Perceval, the son of a widow, out in the forest listening to the sweet season and all the warbling of the birds. In the distance he discovers knights riding towards him. At first he thought that they were devils, which his mother had warned him to stay away from. Then he saw all their bright and shiny armor and he thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, so according to his mother, angels were more beautiful than everything else in the world. Basically, everything his mother told him he believed, because he was very naive and didn’t know any better.
When the knights reached Perceval he through himself in front of them and began to worship them. Of course, the knights thought Perceval was crazy. They told him that they were not angels, but they were knights. During the whole conversation Perceval didn’t answer any of the knights questions, he was too interested in finding out all he could about becoming a knight. The knights told him that if he wanted to become a knight then he would have to go to King Arthur.

The story of king Arthur has multiple adaptations, and there many different forms of King Arthur. Back in the days Chreiten de Troyes wrote the story of Perceval, and The Holy Grail. This story was then adapted by Eric Rohmer in his film Perceval de la Gallois. Eric Rohmer went on to use a few of Thomas Leitch’s forms of adaptation. The modes of adaption that he used were expansion, compression, Anti-House style and celebration. In Thomas Leitch’s writing he explains expansion as adding on new parts of a story, compression as shortening a story to fit a certain time frame, and Celebration is kind of celebrating someone’s work or making a tribute to it. This adaptation of Perceval really brought on an interesting twist to Perceval. Rohmer added elements such as a choir singing every time an important event in the plot happens, and the simple background like the fake trees to try to get that medieval feel to it. The film’s artificiality, irony, and different ways of telling the story can really stop the viewers from gaining a lot of attachment to the story, it the same time it makes you use your brain to really think about the story. The Tale of Sir Thopas begins with the narrator describing a fair and gallant knight who is from the far country of Flanders. It continues on characterizing this knight, Sir Thopas, as a handsome man who was skilled at hunting, horse riding, wrestling, and archery. All of the woman of the land longed for him, but Sir Thopas forsake all of them. Then one day, riding through the forest, the knight hears beautiful birds singing songs of love. Upon hearing this, Sir Thopas hurries to ride away because his heart is sore as there is no woman in the world to his make.
“It was a large, beautiful room, rich and picturesque in the soft, dim light which the maid had turned low. She went and stood at an open window and looked out upon the deep tangle of the garden below. All the mystery and witchery of the night seemed to have gathered there amid the perfumes and the dusky and tortuous outlines of flowers and foliage. She was seeking herself and finding herself in just such sweet half-darkness which met her moods. But the voices were not soothing that came to her from the darkness and the sky above and the stars. They jeered and sounded mourning notes without promise, devoid even of hope. She turned back into the room and began to walk to and fro, down its whole length, without stopping, without resting. She carried in her hands a thin handkerchief, which she tore into ribbons, rolled into a ball, and flung from her. Once she stopped, and taking off her wedding ring, flung it upon the carpet. When she saw it lying there she stamped her heel upon it, striving to crush it. But her small boot heel did not make an indenture, not a mark upon the glittering circlet.
The Wife of Bath tells the tale of a young knight whom, after the rape of a maiden, must search for the answer to the question, "what is it that women most desire?" The knight has one year to find the answer and return to King Arthur's court, or else he will be sentenced to death. The knight's journey does not go well. No matter where he goes or whom he asks, he does not get a good answer. As he approaches, they disappear leaving an old woman. She says that she has the answer to his question, but will only state it before the queen, and on the condition that he does whatever she asks of him. The knight agrees.
A good, chivalric knight should hold ladies in esteem. He should do all in his power to serve and protect ladies. Perceval’s mother instructs him to never “withhold [his] aid” from a lady or a “maiden in distress” (Lawall 1333). She says that “he who does not yield honor to ladies, loses his honor” (Lawall 1333)....
... beloved wife has made the decision for him. After going through this incredible journey of his, not only did he study women but he had to explain what women most desired to the queen. Otherwise he would have been beheaded, but was spared because of his looks. Was this justice? Indeed it would have been justice back in the 1300’s because if you were beautiful you could be spared and do a noble deed for the king/queen as they asked. If you did not complete it who knows what could have happened. But for the knight, he completed what he was told to do and in fact after he raped the woman and he was being prosecuted, the journey of his made him find the true knight inside of him. The old woman choice that was offer to the knight demonstrated that he learned his lesson through his sufficient punishment and redemption for his crime.
After some time had passed, a king went hunting in the forest near the resting place of Talia with his servants and a falcon. The bird escaped and flew through one of the windows of the house. The falcon did not respond to the calls of the king, so he sent a servant to knock on the door and ask for the bird’s return. However, there was no answer at the door and the door itself was locked. The king decided that he would retrieve the bird himself and climbed up the walls. When he jumped through the window, he saw the most lovely girl he had ever laid eyes on, sleeping in her bed. The French knights felt that when they were ready to die they pray to god and angels bring them into heaven. They felt that their live was very important to God. In the second passage of Document F the author writes, “Now Roland feels that the end of his life has come...He held his right glove out to God. Angels descend out of heaven and come to him.” The French knight believed that if he admitted to all of his sins before their death they would go to heaven. He must have been practiced the religion of Christianity because catholics believe in god and most of Europe was Christian. Lancelot, Bors, and Perceval all strive to become more like Galahad, and the author effectively uses these characters to teach his readers lessons about spiritual chivalry and personal salvation. The author provides each of these knights with a series of monks and hermits who counsel and guide him in the ways of spiritual chivalry, for only the most pure Christian knights have any hope of finding the Grail. The adventures of Perceval are very straightforward and easy to interpret, so he provides readers with a suitable introduction to spiritual chivalry and the importance of virginity, asceticism, and complete faith in God. The author faces Bors with more complicated challenges and visions than anything Perceval must handle; since the author tells Bors' adventures after Perceval's, readers should be more prepared to interpret their meaning and significance with regard to spiritual chivalry and personal salvation. The advice Lancelot receives from his series of monks and hermits shows readers the importance of confession and penance, but the author makes it clear that readers should not emulate Lancelot's life of sin ...
The setting of the story takes place in Pelayo and Elisenda's house. The weather in the setting is gloomy and wet as their house fills up with crabs that get washed up from the sea. The story starts out simply enough. There was a merchant who had three daughters and was going to the market. He asked each daughter, “what they wanted from the market.” The two older daughters were very vain and each wanted material things. Beauty, who was the sweetest of the three asked for a rose that was picked for her by her father. The man gets stuck in a storm and finds himself at a castle where he spends the night. The0re seems to be no one around but there is a wonderful dinner set upon the table. The merchant looks around the house and when he finds no one, he eats the meal. Then since he is weary from his trip he spends the night in the house, the next morning he is served breakfast but again no one shows. So he leaves the castle. On his way out he passed a garden filled with roses and he went to pick one, this is when the beast appeared. He said that the merchant was ungrateful because not only did the beast give him shelter, he gave him food. The Beast condemns the merchant to death. When the merchant explains why he was picking the rose the Beast agreed to let him go, under the condition that, he bring his daughter to serve his time. When the merchant gets home he tells this story to his three daughters and Beauty being the generous person that she is agrees to go to the castle for her father. Over time Beauty gets to know the Beast and learns to become friends with him. It is through this friendship that many of the lessons in the story are taught.
