Perception is the different between speaking and writing in English. It varies from context and is reliant on context. When language is spoken, it is a form of behaviour made up of different dialects and morality. The context of which English is spoken or written has a dramatic influence, language is changed by different situations that a person is exposed to, Formal and informal, social events, professional events or cultural influences. Each context is made up of different surroundings and people in which are part of the communication. Different language can be used within the same context and be different from person to person. For example, in a classroom the language used between and a teacher and student would be different to that of a peer to peer interaction. When speaking, people are usually face to face, therefore they can rely on such extra linguistic clues as facial expression and gesture to aid meaning. A work context, such as a classroom as a teacher, a colleague or a student would encourage the use of language as instructing, directing and sharing ideas through teamwork. This would be evident through interactions between teachers and students and also co-workers and other paraprofessionals. Successful use of language in this context would promote learning to the students through appropriate language suitable to their understanding. The students need to be engaged and interested in the speaking, in order gather their attention. A school setting would normally promote a more formal approach to language, however, when formal distancing language is used as opposed to informal bonding language that is social and appealing; the connection may be lost. Language has been said to effect culture and a person’s way of thinking; in addition to culture effecting language. Throughout the last 100 years there have been apparent and subtle changes in the English language. The changes an English speaking person may see throughout their life time are different catchphrases, the way language is written, the type of formality used, and how deeply English is affected by cultures; as well as how it effects other cultures around the world.
How people see and hear language is evidenced in audio recordings, the way people speak and writings. (Gee & Hayes, 2011). Upon studying the accommodation theory (Giles & Coupland, 1973) people can observe that when people talk, people either move together or away from each other. People can also use a different register when talking or maintain their own register. (Giles & Coupland, 1973). According to Halliday (1975) there are seven purposes that language has for children. He states further that children are driven to develop their language since language serves some purpose for them, for example physical, psychological and social needs. (Halliday, 1975). When observing people, people are able to see and hear language.
The aim of this assignment is to establish whether informal communication is just as important as formal communication in a school environment. My hypothesis at the start of the assignment is that both will be essential in order for a school to run efficiently and for a healthy culture to exist in an educational establishment. However, I first need to outline the nature of the school used for this study.
People always communicate using language. In communication, people share their feeling and thought through a system which makes their interlocutors understand what they speak. Wardhaugh (2006) state people constantly choose what they want to say, how they want to say it, and the use of specific linguistic items which best for the way they say things. People need to manage their relationships with the interlocutors as well. It makes them consider who their interlocutors are, the settings in which the communication occurs, and the appropriateness of language being used.

Every human being tends to view certain things in their own different and unique way. Perception is one of the most antique aspects of human interaction and behavior. How we perceive things is different than others, some will see the glass either half empty or as half full it just depends how we look at things.
In its most basic form, communicating involves a sender who takes his or her thoughts and encodes them into verbal and non-verbal messages that are sent to a receiver. The receiver than decodes the messages and attempts to understand what the sender meant to communication. The communication is completed when the receiver transmits verbal and nonverbal feed back to indicate his or her reception and understanding of the message. This process takes place within a context; also know as rhetorical situation, which includes all that affects the communication process such as the sender-receiver’s culture, the sender-receiver‘s relationship, the circumstances surrounding the sender-receiver’s interaction, and the physical environment of the interaction.
Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust.

Language is a part of our everyday lives, and we can describe the meaning of language in many ways. As suggested in Gee and Hayes (2011, p.6 ) people can view language as something in our minds or something existing in our world in the form of speech, audio recordings, and writings or we can view language as a way of communicating with a group of people. Language can be used to express our emotions, make sense of our mental and abstract thoughts and assists us in communicating with others around us. Have you ever wondered who taught you to talk the way you do? People learn to talk and express themselves everyday of their lives. Starting from the day you were born you used language or some form of it to communicate with those around you. As a baby you usually show your displeasure with your new surroundings by crying, and if you don’t the doctor will make sure you do. Everyday we express our point of view to others in some form of language. Whether it is through verbal communication, written discourse or through body language, you can tell if a person is upset, angry, or happy. We as human beings don’t realize how much language has to do with our lives. How can you determine if one of your friends is angry with you? Is there a different tone to their voice? Do they have a stern look on their face? Of course they do, your friend feels the need to express their anger to you by these different forms of language. Where do we learn to use these different forms of language? How are our uses of these languages shaped? The three main contributing factors to how we express ourselves through language come from our schooling, our friends, and most of all from our families.
This means that I could create other ways for students to communicate without disturbing the classroom. One idea that was reinforced was that as a teacher I want to use non-verbal’s to get an understanding of how my students feel about the material. With an understanding of how the students feel about the material the better you can help student who need the extra help if they feel like they don’t understand the material. Overall, I feel like I am making progress on using that standard. I say this because I feel like I was able to use non-verbal communication pretty effectively to understand how my students felt about the material but I can also improve this my possibility adding in some instructional media to communicate with the student to improve learning. One goal that I have when I have my professional semester is that I want to use interactive technology and media to help my students communicate and learn effectively. This is important because in today’s digital world it’s very important that students know how to use technology to learn and to be able to communicate with others. The other goal I have as a future teacher is that I want to use non-verbal to understand my students’ knowledge and help them grow and have an understanding of all the material and because of this understand be able to see progress in their learning.
