PepsiCo’s Restaurants Definition of Problem Senior Management of PepsiCo is evaluating the potential acquisition of two companies – Carts of Colorado and California Pizza Kitchen – in order to expand the company’s restaurant business. If indeed PepsiCo decides to pursue the acquisition of one or both, they must decide how to align each of these business units in its historically decentralized management approach and how to forge relationships between the acquired business units and existing business units. In their evaluation, Senior Management is faced with the question of whether the necessary capital investment in order to purchase one or both of the businesses can be profitable for each of the acquired business units, but must also take into consideration that the additional business units will not hinder the profitability of the existing business units. Analysis of the Problem At the end of 1991, PepsiCo had EBITDA of $2.1 billion or operating profit margin of 10.8% - down from profit margins of 12.2% and 11.7% in 1990 and 1989, respectively. In addition, net sales only grew by 10.1% in 1991 – considerably low versus growth of 16.8% and 21.6% in 1990 and 1989, respectively. Recent acquisitions of Taco Bell franchises in 1988, bottling operations in 1989, Smiths Crisps Ltd. and Walkers Crisps Holding Ltd. in 1989, and Sabritas S.A. de C.V. in 1990 aided sales in growth in 1989 and 1990. Additionally, a joint venture with the Thomas J. Lipton Co. in 1991 to develop and market new tea-based beverages may lead to greater sales in the future. However, there is some need for an immediate return on its investments in order to sustain historical revenue growth and increase the current profit margins. Pizza Hut, on the other hand, has numerous locations in markets and does not cater to a specific type customer. Pizza Hut does not offer the variety of pizzas that does a California Pizza Kitchen. PepsiCo can potentially acquire California Pizza Kitchen and integrate it in the company’s decentralized management approach. Since PepsiCo executives have experience in the quick service food industry, it should not be a reach for the company to successfully run this casual dining restaurant. For this venture to be successful, it is imperative that management cut down the operating costs at California Pizza Kitchen through the PepsiCo Food Systems distribution network and improve on the 3.1% operating margin that California Pizza Kitchen is currently operating at.

Nestle is in the position to gain a strong hold on the home dessert market for ice cream. Ice-fili needs to compete more aggressively in this portion of the market. In addition franchises and fast food chains should be targeted for partnerships or joint ventures so Ice-Fili’s ice cream can grow in association with a post meal dessert opposed to simply impulsive snack purchases. A key avenue to explore is an Initial Public Offering. This would generate enough funds to continue capital investment in technology desperately needed as well as promoting international market growth.

Entering the fast food industry needs also to be taken with a clear approach so as to reduce stiff competition from large firms like McDonald.

However, the public was introduced to the first international restaurant opening in 1998 by the way of “Perfect Pizza” in the United Kingdom (www.papajohns.com, 2017). Regardless, Papa John’s is a significant player in the pizza industry they continuously want to know what the future pizza industry will hold for them. At one time, the overall performance of Papa John’s stock was not doing so good when they are compared side by side with other pizza industries. However, the potential is with the pan pizza the management team believes this will be the best introduction in ten years (Maze, 2016).
The fast-casual restaurant is one of the most competitive and fastest growing industries in the world. Chipotle has thought to have reinvented this category and this has led to their explosive growth in the early stages of the company. As it has leveled off, however, one can see where mistakes have been made leading to the sharp decline in their sales and stock. Starbucks has continued to grow, but has also seen declines in their stock. Comparing these companies, one can see how each have went from standalone stores to market leading companies. They must continue to innovate otherwise they will be seen as just another restaurant and no longer see growth.

According to the Krispy Kreme’s most recent quarter, which ended August 3, 2003, it posted an 11.3 percents rise in system wide same-store sales, including 15.6 percents growth at company operated units (Peters, 2003). From the financial report of second quarter in 2003, it could foretell there would be more earnings growth in the future as long as Krispy Kreme finds more new markets in which to launch doughnut shops.
