Peer Tutor Reflection

During my short time as a peer tutor, I find that seeing other students gradually growing in their musical ability most enjoyable as a peer tutor. Many of the students in the class have close to no musical background and within a very short amount of time (just a few weeks). I find this quick growth to be very inspiring and being a part of that growth most enjoyable. Since I've started my peer tutoring, I find how comfortable the fellow students act when we talk to each other to be most surprising. Going into the peer tutoring, I expected the students to be more reserved and wouldn't share much with me. However, they open up quite easily with me and talk with me casually about everyday events as well as class work. I also find the rapid progression of musical skill through the class also very surprising. When I first started learning clarinet, it took a very long time until me and my class could even start playing music from the practice book. My host teach, Mr. McCann, Understands this concept and gives the students 15-20 minutes to practice pieces at their own pace. I've also learned that targets are important for growth. With targets, students know what they are expected to do during their independent time, and because of this they can plan what has to be done and how long they have to do it. I've also learned that teachers do their best to make sure students are, to a certain degree, engaged with the lesson. Teachers don't always pick students that have their hands up to answer questions, they pick students who they believe are not engaged or at the very least not interested.
