After the assassination of Julius Caesar on 44 B.C, Augustus became the first emperor (27 B.C-A. D 14) who transformed the declining Roman Republic into the stable Roman Empire. His military tactics, political diplomacy, and innovative constitutional policies led Rome to witness a long period of peace, economic prosperity and stability that lasted for almost 200 years during the period of Pax Romana. The era of “Pax Romana” refers to the peaceful phase of Rome which lasted from the time of 27 B.C.E to 180 C.E. Though Augustus never claimed the title of king for himself, he concerned himself with all the aspects of the empire.

He won popularity among the Romans for his generosity and good deeds toward the people. First, he secured the loyalty of the military as he “stabilized the boundaries of the empire, provided for the defense of the frontiers [and] reorganized and reduced the size of the army. . .” Next, to placate both the senate and the aristocrats, he passed laws in accordance with the Roman traditions. Then, to secure a favorable position among the people, he beautified the city of Rome. On many critical situations, such as the instance when Rome had a shortage of grain, Augustus stepped in and aided the people with his own wealth. Furthermore, he established colonies and granted money and property to all the Roman soldiers for their services and distributed a share of his wealth among every citizen. Augustus was respected and loved by the populace of Rome because his reign offered an alternative form of monarchy that brought high standards of morality, genuine social concern and a sense of assimilation among the fellow
