The song Let Her Go by Passenger, includes many different types of literary devices. The most valuable literary devices used in this piece are metaphor, juxtaposition, imagery and symbolism. Firstly, Metaphors are a commonly used literary device throughout the song by the composer. Metaphor is when a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object. Passenger writes: “You only need the light when it’s burning low” (Line 4). The metaphor means privilege, and how many times in life we only truly understand the power and meaning of something once we lose it. In the first stanza, first line; I saw two trees embracing, this means that there is a couple that is in love. In the second and third line we see that the male is weaker “one leaned on the other, as if to throw her down” and in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh line we notice that the female has the strength, willpower and is dominating. In the second stanza, line one, two and three we see that the female being dominant makes the male feel broken and intimidated. In line four “the most wind-warped, you could see”, hear we see that there is a major problem between the two.

The first stanza describes the depth of despair that the speaker is feeling, without further explanation on its causes. The short length of the lines add a sense of incompleteness and hesitance the speaker feels towards his/ her emotions. This is successful in sparking the interest of the readers, as it makes the readers wonder about the events that lead to these emotions. The second and third stanza describe the agony the speaker is in, and the long lines work to add a sense of longing and the outpouring emotion the speaker is struggling with. For this part of imagery, the main character Jackson Jackson has received his grandmother’s regalia from the pawn shop employee without having to pay the total of $999 he originally had to pay. They all watched me dance with my grandmother. I was my grandmother, dancing.” This statement made at the end of the story indicates a strong sense of imagery that details Jackson’s emotions towards getting his grandmother’s regalia from the pawn shop. The yellow bead he mentions was his strongest symbol of feeling toward his grandmother, feeling as if he were a part of that yellow bead, in this case, his grandmother. Jackson describes in more detail of how he felt more like his grandmother after he wrapped the regalia around him. The whole poem is, in essence, one giant symbol. The opening line questions, "Why you let him play you like a video?". All in all, this summarizes the entire poem. Zakon uses symbols to question a woman why she lets her boyfriend, or possibly husband, treat her the way he does. Zakon asks why she lets him control her, ultimately stating he has the remote control to her life. She says that he "Change your channels because he can't stand your show", meaning he tells her how to act when he does not like her attitude. The line "Hypnotize you until the screen turns blue", representing the man putting the woman into a trance so to speak, so she says exactly what he wants her to say, and does exactly what he wants her to do.

In “Love Poem” Nim uses a metaphor in the first stanza to emphasize his love clumsiness. Frederick says “whose hands shipwreck vases” describing his love as a clumsy and destructive woman. This metaphor specifically compares his love’s hands to shipwreck vases suggesting that her hands are as destructive as storms are to ships. This metaphor can be also classified as a hyperbole. The breaking of a vase is not normally something you would refer to with the term “shipwreck” but this phrase exaggerates the image of the poem. Line two to four are examples of hyperbole. Farris uses imagery in stanza three to portray the speaker’s affection for his “unpredictable dear.” He uses alliteration in this stanza when he says “taxi drivers’ terror” to emphasize the chaos she causes on the road. The poet appears amused by her inconsistency when driving. This can be seen through the contrast he makes between her “shrinking” from traffic one minute and then “leaping” the next. Nims uses this alliteration and imagery to exaggerate his love flaws. Furthermore, more in stanza five Frederick uses personification when he says “your lipstick grinning on your coat” emphasizes her clumsiness. In the second stanza the persona contrasts this clumsiness with objects to her skills in dealing with people. In the last two line of the last stanza the tone changes entirely. No matter how clumsy
