The following essay explores the factors that have an impact on the development of individuals to promote long term involvement in sport and physical activity by reviewing a range of literature and sporting frameworks. It has been said that positive developmental outcomes have been experienced in young people who are actively engaged in sport. (Fraser-Thomas et al 2005) The factors that influence this positive development can have an impact on whether young people remain involved in sport long term.

Further to this point the model has been described as basic “Fundamentally, this is a generic model rather than an individualized plan for athletes” (Ford et al 2011) suggesting that this model would need to be tailored to individual sports and athletes for it to be effective.
Participant development model
Currently used to support the UK coaching framework, the participant development model “is aspirational: it reflects how the participant population could be thought about and structured, rather than how it actually is. It is a model for participation in sport, rather than a model of participation.” (The National Coaching Foundation 2009) This was developed as a generic development model that governing bodies could adapt to suit their own sports and uses similar principles to the LTAD
