Everyone has experience with parenting in some form or another. Whether this is as directly as being a parent yourself, observing the cultural norms of a family, or memories of the individuals that you think of as your own parents, we all have events in our past with parenting that have helped us become who we are today. Over the course of the semester while learning about all different types of theories, practices, cultures and concepts of parenting I cannot help but reflect on my own parents and experiences with them. This connection between subjects and events is critical not only to my learning process, but to my ability to apply this outside of the classroom. Connecting my experiences with my students and their families can give me a better understanding of facilitating their learning and the subjects covered in class are what strengthen these connections. A person’s experiences in their past make up a part of who they are in the present. Reflecting on my own past gives me the opportunity to understand who I am now and why I think and act in the way I do. While I reflect on events in my life and how they are applied to the topics in class I try to think of ones that will directly influence the way I will interact with not only adults but also children. My parent’s divorce is the first event that comes to mind, and it does so because it is a event that had a positive impact on me. While in most cases, divorce can be stressful and hard for children to handle, the divorce of my parents was for the better and even at a young age I knew this. This is the first event that comes to mind when I think of parenting concepts because I think of my mother as a single parent and her style of discipline. As a single parent my mother worked two jobs and did not have a lot of spare time to spend with
