Victor Cruz, Out of the Blue, written by Peter Schrager, is an inspiring story of a boy who reached ultimate success through perseverance. Born on November 11, 1986 in Paterson, New Jersey, Victor Cruz had a very rough, but unique life. Victor was raised by his Mother, Abuela, and Papi in an apartment at 44 East Twentieth Street. Most kids who grew up in Paterson never went to college, instead, they adapted to life on the streets to survive. This book is about a boy overcoming his struggles, finding his passion, and becoming a football star. Although the Big Apple was only a ten minute drive from where Victor grew up, he said, “New York City might as well have been the Land of Oz, some magical world with streets paved of gold.” Although Victor and his family lived in poverty, they had a wealth of love for one another. At first, Victor was confused as to why he waited so long but soon came around to accept him. Mike Walker was a firefighter with a family of his own including a son and daughter, Malik and Ebony, who soon became family to Victor. Also, that year, he started taekwondo which was on the second floor of their apartment building. He started at a yellow belt and pushed himself all the way up to a black belt by the time he turned twelve. This was a great honor and showed his maturity and determination because he was the youngest to have ever reached black belt at this age in the state of New Jersey. In fourth grade, he was the only boy in band to play the flute; therefore, classmates consistently made fun of him. That didn’t stop him from bringing his flute everywhere. At age 10 his father introduced him to the NFL and two years later he started playing on a team called the PAL North
