Opioids In Pregnancies The use of Opioids drugs in pregnancies should be a federal crime, considering the damage that is done to the unborn fetus. Opioids that are taken during any trimester of a pregnancy can cause major birth defects that could lead to either life threating or mental illness. Drug abuse in pregnancies today is one of the leading causes of miscarriages, stillbirths, and premature births. Research has also shown that drug use during pregnancy shows later signs of attention deficit disorder (ADD) and behavior problems. Opioids are narcotic prescription drugs, which are codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, methadone, morphine, and oxycodone. There are certain opioids that are prescribed during a pregnancy such as, Norco and Lorcet. These type of opioids should be taken with extreme precautions and thoroughly discuss with a provider before use.
