It’s impossible to fix a leaking faucet without fixing the pipes first. You can try to mop up the water, but the problem won’t go away until the leak is stopped at the source. Likewise, the current opioid epidemic that is taking over lives will not come to an end unless the source- unneeded opioid prescriptions for teens- is stopped. A plethora of teens receive prescriptions for minor injuries, but doctors over prescribing these medications can put teens on the road to a full blown addiction. The current opioid epidemic is a problem that plagues the lives of thousands of people every day, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is taking steps to end the problem.

In 2014, more than 5,700 teens in the US used prescription painkillers for the first time without a doctor’s guidance, and a quarter of teens think of prescription drugs as a study aid (Volk). In fact, 56.4% of teen opioid users use them to relax or relieve tension, according to a 2002-2006 study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, in which 12,441 high school seniors filled out questionnaires about their opioid usage (Wilbert). This stress relief can seem appealing to teens struggling with pressure related to school.
In addition, laws make it difficult for teens to receive medication to help them quit opioids. Methadone and Suboxone are two drugs that ease withdrawal symptoms, but these may not be covered by Medicaid. Adolescents must have failed treatment two times to get Methadone through Medicaid. Only a small number of adolescents end up getting medication to help them quit (Harding). This is concerning because not only are young people at high risk of developing an opioid addiction, the resources they need to help them quit are unavailable or hard to obtain for
