In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is about the tribal world of a man named Okonkwo and how everything is slowly taken away from him, even his life. What led Okonkwo to his fate was his father’s failure and his influence made Okonkwo the way he was; which affected his life in the future. The influence of his father caused Okonkwo to have a need to be the best, fear failure, show no emotion, ruling his family with a heavy hand, and worrying about his image as a warrior or leader. Okonkwo’s need to be the best was a crucial point that eventually caused his downfall. “And so Okonkwo ruled by one passion-to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness” (Achebe, 13). Okonkwo’s father was a rather kind man in the clan but kindness go you nowhere in Umuofia. Young and old would call Unoka an agbala, which means a woman or a man with no title, once Okonkwo learned the meaning of the word he hated everything his father stood for. As Okonkwo grew he began to be emotionless because in his perspective anything positive would make him weak like his father. “He knew that Umuofia would not go to war. He knew because they had let the other messengers escape.” (Achebe, 205) Okonkwo had just killed one of the District Commissioners’ messengers and was ready for the clan to fight alongside him to begin a war. The moment he saw the rest of the messengers run he knew his clan had been tarnished. The war he was anticipating wasn’t going to occur because his strong manly clan were vulnerable and weak. Okonkwo felt many negative emotions as he ran away. No one not even his best friend Obierika new that Okonkwo was feeling so distraught because he hid so well from others. Okonkwo had high hopes of returning to Umuofia but once he saw what had become he had lost all his hope. Okonkwo had developed a phobia for failure as a result of Unoka’s inadequacy to do anything. Okonkwo’s fear made him do regrettable things, such as killing Ikemefuna. Okonkwo strived to be the polar opposite of his father so for this reason he seemed harsh and emotionless towards his family and people around him. Okonkwo didn’t stop himself but changing his whole family to make sure they weren’t like his father. Okonkwo tried but he couldn’t change Nwoye’s lazy ways. Okonkwo was finally able to be superior than his father when he decided to be a warrior. Appearing as a strong warrior made him do regrettable things and eventually made him be looked down upon by the clan. Okonkwo was not responsible for his fate for the cause that his father molded him into the strong man he was. Okonkwo’s attempt at becoming better than his father was successful at first but in the end they were what led Okonkwo to his fate. Many teenagers that have shot up schools in the last couple of months are at fault for their crimes but people don’t know their whole story.
