Oedipus: Victim of Fate or He Deserves What He Got?

Fate is the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. It is a very common theme used in literature. We’ve seen examples from stories such as: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Iliad. We’ve been reading Oedipus the King written by Sophocles. My main thesis that I would be talking about is if: Oedipus was actually a victim of fate, or did he deserve what he got. In my opinion, Oedipus does not deserve what he got and is a victim of fate. This is because all his actions were unintentional. However, some of his actions were ignorant. Right from the beginning we see how Oedipus was envisioned to kill his father and marry his mother, thus his feet being pinned together and him being left on a cliff to die. Fortunate for him and unfortunate at the same time, a shepherd found him and later, the childless king and queen of Corinth, Polybus and Merope adopted him. One day, his fate is revealed to him, which urges him to leave for Thebes, away from Corinth. While travelling to Thebes, the young man encounters a...
