Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder of the brain and behavior. This disorder causes a lot of axiety in those affected by it. I would know, I have with it for many years! OCD involves both obsessions and compulsions that take a lot of time to get in the way of important activities I value. This circuit relays information from a part of the brain called the orbitofrontal cortex to another area called the thalamus and includes other regions such as the caudate nucleus of the basal ganglia. When this circuit is activated, these impulses are brought to your attention and they cause you to perform a particular behavior to address the impulse.. We don't want to have these ideas, but we can't stop them. These thoughs can be really disturbing and distracting. Compulsions are behaviors or rituals that you feel like you need to do over, and over again. Usually these are performed in an attempt to make the obsessions go away. Obsessive thoughts usually come back stronger. And the compulsive behaviors often causes more anxiety themselves as they become more demanding and time consuming. Just because you might have obsessive thoughts or perform compulsive behavior does not mean you have obsessive compulsive disorder. Personally for me, I always have to make sure everything is turned off (lights, tv, curling iorns etc). These thoughts run in my head all the time. I worry if I don't turn them off, the house will burn down. Then I ask myself over, and over again, "Did I turn the curling iron off? I better go in the house again to check." Another symptom of mine would have to be foot tapping. This is an obsessive behavior of mine. Whenever I take a test I always get nervous, an tap my feet. Other obsessive symptoms include; the fear of being in contact with germs, the idea that everything has to be "just right", or the fear of losing or not having things you need. Compulsive symptoms include; double checking things, washing your hands, or hoarding. To this day there is no cure for OCD, but there are methods of treatment that can relief you. After further study, it is now possible to treat patients using medication alone. Out of this study, 40/60 people reported that it treated them. Other way to cure this disorder would have to be therapy. This kind of therapies for OCD consist of medication, psychotherapy or both. There are more therapies and medications, but it would be best if you tried both of them, to see which one works best for
