Most students at UVI loiter in-between classes and can’t figure out what to do. Students are ecstatic to learn that there is a place on campus that will alleviate all your stress, concerns, and problems. The UVI activity center is one of the only activity center on the island of St. Thomas located at the University of the Virgin Islands it is a place where people go to escape from personal issues, networking, and fun.
I normally pass the outside the activity center about a minimal of three times a day because I live right next to the activity center in north dorms. It has a walk way on the far right of the activity center leading to the cafeteria. On the outside of the Activity it has two Coca-Cola vending machine. The activity center is at a great location because it is located in-between north and middle dorms. Overall the activity is a cool place to go to hang out occasionally.
The very first time I visited the activity center was in the summer during UVI’s summer bridge program. the activity center has a ping pong table, snack machine, dominoes table, pool table, a section with a TV, and couches. The activity center also has a mail room, bathroom, conference room, a storage room, a balcony, and two offices. The activity center has carpet flooring on the inside. I have been in the activity center several times over the months at The University of the Virgin Islands playing pool, videogames, ping pong, and dominoes.

Ashika has been working at the University of the Virgin Island’s Activity Center since January of 2016. Her daily routine consists of coming to work around 8:30 in the morning to help open the activity center office. Then after she gets situated at her desk she checks her emails and follows up with the activity director to see what’s planned for the day. Around 12:00 Ms. Ashika normally goes for lunch for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. As a commuter to McDaniel College, I don’t spend much time on campus outside of classes. Therefore, the relevance of after school activities doesn’t apply to me as much. Keeping current with events happening on campus grounds, is often a daunting task. However in the spirit of class participation, I decided to create awareness that fall break is upon us.

She took 7 days of class to catch up on her high school. She decided to complete her per semester like one year of high school. Monday to Friday she take 5 classes, extra early-morning math class, night classes twice a week, Saturday history class and plus independent studies. She gets one day free to spend, but that one day also, she has to do her assignment. Sometimes she sleeps at her friend’s house, staircase, and hallway.

Kelly was hired as an assistant language teacher (ALT) and had been working for six months. She was to work three days a week in the board of education office and two days helping with the English program. Her contract stated that her hours were Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 5 PM. These hours were not the hours of the Japanese workers. Their culture had the employees working six days a week and rarely took time off. Kelly’s contract also had vacation and sick leave time given but stipulations as to when a doctor’s note was needed and the notice time given for time off for vacations.
They hardly ever work their promised eight-hour shift and normally work overtime. For example, their typical shift starts from nine in the morning and ends at eight or nine at night and they sometimes find themselves leaving their offices close to midnight! We walked along the different schools, bookstores, the church, classrooms, and the on campus transfer residence hall. The most beautiful place was the amphitheater where the university hosts many student activities. The amphitheater can accommodate up to 500 people. Everyone on campus seemed friendly and welcoming. It was interesting to note that UVA does not have student ambassadors to take prospective students on tours.
