It is a heavily studied area with many treatment options. OCD is a recurrent psychiatric disorder causing significant disability. (Geller and March, 2012). Those with OCD report that obsessions are distressing and compulsion are aimed at reducing this distress (Foa et al, 1995). Min-sup et al (2008), established that equivalent cognitive strengths and weaknesses are associated with OCD in both adults and children, hence relaying that treatments for either groups are closely related. This essay will focus on paediatric OCD with CBT being the preferred treatment method. It will briefly look at the signs and symptoms of OCD then continue into more detail discussing CBT’s effectiveness, through what is involved, strategies learnt to overcome OCD and pharmacotherapy. A review of evidence will be presented of studies showing the effectiveness for peadatric OCD.
