Ms. Jones a 28-year old African American female who presented to the emergency department for evaluation of right foot pain, fever, and nausea. The purpose of this paper is to identify 2 nursing diagnosis with 1 scholarly, supported article for each diagnosis. And to summarize 2 scholarly articles that address evidence-based practice when treating this patient.

Status of the Patient

Ms. Jones has never been married, no children. Lives independently since age 20 and currently lives with mother and sister to help with family support. Patient works 32 hours a week as a printing and shipping clerk. Ms. Jones is very active in her church and relies on them for support. Occasional alcohol use of 10-12 drinks a month and occasional cannabis use from

Patient is 5’7” tall and weighs 195lbs. Labs revealed a high WBC at 18.6, a low Hgb at 11.1, a low Hct at 32.8, and a low MCV at 79. High neutrophils count at 76, low lymphocytes of 16 and a HgbA1c of 8.7. Glucose measured high at 133, and BUN was high at 28. Protein and Albumin low at 5.9 and 3.4. Patients LDL was high at 124. Urine protein was high with 1+ and glucose 1+ as well. The bacterial culture of right foot indicated Staphylococcus aureus. Right foot x-ray showed mild degenerative changes accelerated for patient’s age and mild dorsal soft tissue swelling in the forefront. No acute osseous finding in the right foot or ankle.

Acute pain often occurs from surgery, ischemia and acute inflammation. Pain acts as a warning sign to underlying issues in the body (Emmanuel & Lee, 2014). Ms. Jones is unable to walk without pain due to injury to right foot. Pain is a 9 on a scale of 0-10 when ambulating.
