Achievement for the sole purpose of wealth and status is often glorified by society as the ultimate aim of existence, and yet, there is no greater waste of intellectual and innovative capacity. I desire to have a more meaningful existence. As a nurse, I will be motivated by how much I can give back to society, rather than what I can accumulate for myself. As I grow throughout my professional career, I will strive to share my knowledge and capabilities to help others in the community achieve wellness. In fact, helping others is the core essence of a great nurse and undoubtedly a nurse’s greatest attribute. To me, they were heroes. They seemed to do it all, from administering medicine to listening intently to patients concerns. I always thought they had a unique ability for making each patient feel important. I admired their resilience and knew that I too wanted to help people just as they did daily without complaint. I always imagined my future in the medical field and I knew that attending college was an important part of this dream. However, life had other plans for me. After deferring my educational dreams to help provide for my family, I am ready to set on a path to fulfilling my academic and professional goals. I see my upcoming challenges as a relay where I must carry the baton on each leg of the journey myself. My plan is to attend a university and complete my Bachelors of Science in Nursing. My preparation for the race was inadequate. I was born and raised in the inner city of Kingston, Jamaica with both parents only completing high school. My dad was a self-taught mechanic and my mom worked as a janitor for a local hospital. My parents worked hard to provide for their six children but it seemed that it wasn’t nearly enough. We lived from paycheck to paycheck. Any surprise bill could turn our household from stable to tumultuous. I learned early on not to ask for anything because we could not afford it. For me, the final lap will be about giving back. I envision myself working as a Psychiatric Nurse. Having a family member who suffers from schizophrenia, I understand the complexity mental health issues can bring forth. Also, I am personally aware of the strong stable support group necessary to handle and ensure the well-being of an afflicted family member. It is of utmost importance to me, to create an environment which is both fulfilling and encouraging while aiming to preserve my patients’ dignity and worthiness. In my opinion, the field of nursing influences both socio-cultural and socio-economic areas for which the implications reaches far beyond the hospital. A career in nursing will allow me to utilize this platform to volunteer my services in places that are in dire need of health care professionals, and to help bridge the gap in global health equity by bringing critical services to the doorstep of those who need it the
