Nostalgia is, by definition, a longing for another person. It is an idealized past, or a combination of many different memories; all integrated together, and in the process all negative emotions filtered out (google). I believe that nostalgia is a term that I believe to be overused, misunderstood, and often confused with the act of remembering or reminiscing. Nostalgia is the emotional attachment; longing to go back to that memory, it often overcomes one without warning. I believe we all have the capacity of nostalgia, but the over labeling has cheapened such a unique raw feeling. I can hear a song, and remember my sophomore homecoming dance perfectly. That; however, does not make me want to return to that time. Are the memories fond, yes they are, but to go back? Not even for one moment.
In “when nostalgia was a disease” Julie Beck, describes true nostalgia. The swiss soldiers would hear a familiar milking song and would immediately be reminded of home. These soldiers would long to go home, often the only way to “cure” this disease would be to send them home. That was nostalgia then and is nostalgia today. Nostalgia is much more important and is a true emotional feeling. It is much more than just a “look” to aspire to. This in itself could be a source of nostalgia but, the item itself may or may not be nostalgic. If my sister and I were both listening to Fresh Prince of Bellaire theme song, I can definitely say I remember this song, the song transports me back to snuggling up on the sofa watching this show. Her memory may be completely different, she herself may long to go back to that time in her life. Indeed it could very well be a nostalgic piece for her. In Nostalgia now, he almost references nostalgia as though every memory or time period is nostalgic. He generalizes nostalgia in this way.It is quite disturbing that a feeling I so admire and find incredibly impactful can be lumped into the same category as trendy, postmodern styles. They aren’t nostalgic at all but, people that appreciate and find these iconic items trendy, fun, beautiful.
I suppose there is something to be said about these fun and great memories as a force that allows us to feel less alone in this world. There is truly a benefit to reminiscing and basking in our memories. I also think that there is a certain bleakness to the realization that no two people can truly share the same thoughts and emotions, our shared memories are proof that there are an infinite number of things that connect us to millions of strangers.
