Every year, an event is conducted at Norview High School called Challenge Day, in which students get to express their emotions and feelings to build friendships and relieve built up stress. My first time attending this unique program was my freshmen year of High School. We were all placed into random groups, and each was called a “small family.” Then, the facilitators told us to share—within our groups—whatever we want. I expected the individuals in my group to share an exciting event they participated in; however, I saw them disclose very emotional instances in their life. This group activity, honestly, was an experience that altered my character indefinitely. I realized that everyone has a story, and I should not judge people because
...ethnicity or culture; it happens to anyone such as, doctors, lawyers, teacher, judges, students and many more. My observation of the meeting was that every member seemed to really listen to each other’s sharing, where each member shared an experience, and others could relate to that particular experience or had similar experiences, such as struggling with promiscuous behavior or relapses in attending meetings, but they still stuck with the program because they wanted change in their lives. No one was rushed in their sharing, and everyone was opened and friendly. It was a cohesive group. I felt a sense of that openness, when I was introduced to everyone, and included at close of the meeting, where everyone one formed a circle, held hands and recited the serenity prayer. Overall, it was a new and knowledgeable experience Another Chance gave me.
Subject N told me this story about how she was chosen for student of the month and couldn’t express how she was feeling because she was feeling more than one emotion. She realized that, she said she felt “excited and nervous” because they needed to interview her to display it in the hallway. She is showing an understanding that more than one emotion can be experienced. During my second time observing her she was also sad because her friends cat died a week ago, showing she is aware of events that lead to emotional reactions (Denhman, Bassett, & Wyatt, 2007; Denham & others, 2012; Kuebli, 1994; Thompson, 2013c, d).
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. This paper will establish the group contract of the family group and for fostering group cohesion, and shaping norms within the family group. This paper will discuss specific behaviors to be changed by group members, activities the family can engage in the family group that are fun, and specific ways the family can demonstrate love and belonging to each other. In addition, other information to be discussed is Choice Therapy and Reality Therapy and how they may apply to the group and this will be discussed in the week three videos. Furthermore, when looking at the group Guy needs to work on self-esteem issues, Beatrice needs to learn to be assertive and Katherine (Kat) needs to learn to deal with her emotions.
I had the opportunity to interview with the school psychologists on our campus. She currently holds a master’s level degree in psychology and has worked for the district for 10 years now with 3 of those years at this location. Discussing what she does on a regular bases she explained how she reaches out to contacts within the community to help parents and children with unresolved issues to help them find answers. She creates activities that help to nurture a better lifestyle for these families. I discussed with her in length about these events and she described them as a social environment conducive to a higher quality in learning, social interaction and family lifestyle. The reason for planning these events in our campus is because of the lower demographics and the campus considered a special class of schools which are known as Title 1 which receives more aid than other campuses.
According to Bugge, Haugstvedt, Rokholt, Darbyshire and Helseth (2012), “Adolescents describe bereavement as tiring and themselves being ‘tired out’, physically, emotionally and cognitively, having much less energy than usual” (pg 2163). This study conducted analyzed the physical experiences adolescents typically have with grief and concluded that many students found it easier to discuss physical symptoms in counseling, versus emotional reactions (Bugge et al., 2012, pg. 2164). According to Sandra A. Lopez (2011), “It is important to understand adolescents as being uniquely different from others based on their community affiliations, which may be social, cultural, religious, and/or economical” (pg 10). This essay will explore the authors meaning of reflection, how various reflective styles can benefit the practitioners within their settings, and how important reflection is within Early Years Practice. According to Appleby (2010, p.10), reflection is a generic term which describes various behaviours involving feelings, and thinking about thoughts and experiences, in order to examine issues and develop, new understandings and insights. Reflection within practice allows the practitioner to develop a sense of awareness around their daily activities, and helps them to evaluate how they could evolve these activities further, if the given opportunity was to arise again. Kayla and I presented on October 5th, our theory was family emotional systems theory. We focused on the movie Cheaper by the Dozen and in particular, how one of their sons, Mark, was affected by their functioning as a family. This family had twelve children, which made our case unique but also interesting to focus on. Our major concept from the family emotional system theory that we focused on was differentiation of self. We believed that this concept fit best with Marks situation in his family, but it also fit his family as a whole.
Wofford College has an outstanding academic program that I would be so grateful to gain knowledge from and learn from great professors and my peers. Most universities and colleges offer internships and programs in the students interests but I believe that Wofford College is different from any of college. I am convinced that Wofford College puts their students first in education and in their future, they provide their students that experiences that will prepare them in the future. One major thing I have learned from my first semester at Roanoke College is that college life and life in general has had many twists, turns, ups and downs and at Roanoke I did not have the support or help from my professors. I also find this to be true in my personal life because I enjoy helping my family and my husband in making their lives easier, even if it’s just small acts of service, like making dinner after a long day of work. One weakness that I have always struggled with and that the test revealed to me is the fact that I am unlikely to express my needs or feelings to others, which in turn, causes pent up anger or frustrations. This can limit my success in life because I am more likely to forget about my personal feelings and need to be happy. I tend to bottle up my feelings until one day I just can’t take anymore and I explode into a bunch of overwhelming emotions. I have been working on this for years and I am making progress to overcome showing my hidden feelings. I try to be honest with people if a certain situation arises and tell them how it makes me feel. I have come to realize that keeping things inside isn’t healthy and not fair to my happiness and well-being. In the United States, young adults go through various transitions, such as changes in living arrangement, social groups, academics, and independence in their daily life. These transitions can trigger feelings of isolation, a sense of not belonging, or depression. It is my hope to see how college students on campus may be accompanied in faith through their life transitions. I consider how retreats serve to accompany these students in creating a community of peers who share their stories openly and listen attentively to one another. More specifically, I am interested in how narrative therapy assists in the formation of students who serve as leaders at these retreats. The entire Performing Others process really opened my eyes and gave me the opportunity to learn in a way I hadn’t before. Observing a group, researching it, interviewing members and performing what I learned for my classmates challenged me to think in new ways and step out of my comfort zone. As I stated in my performance, small group wasn’t what I expected. Even though I had some experience with church groups and had a close friend involved in the group, attending the meetings made me see things in a new light, and changed my perspective on not only how I see people in the group, but also how I see myself.
