King Charles the first founded the Carolinas in 1629 and named the colony after himself. Carolina derives from the Latin word for Charles (Carolus). Originally, the colony was much larger and covered both Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee. Immediately, differing ideas and arguments broke out among the leaders of the colony. In 1712, North Carolina seceded from its southern half when the Lords Proprietors made Edward Hyde governor of North Carolina and not all Carolina. It was officially recognized as separate colonies in 1729. Often times, we think of the founders of our country as intelligent and divinely inspired. Charles the second gave the land to eight very wealthy men who helped to restore him to power. They were known as Lords Proprietors. These men were exceptionally self-absorbed, figuratively very nearsighted, and to put it politely, “pompous idiots.” They nominated several governors; each was a bigger disaster than the last. A couple of my favorite examples involve the following. Robert Quary who occupied the office of governor for exactly three months before the Lords Proprietors removed him for “using his position to encourage pirates”. Seth Sothel committed various crimes while in office, including jailing people that he did not like, stealing cattle, and accepting bribes from inmates in prison. The colony eventually revolted and captured him. He was then banished from the Carolinas. Thomas Miller was overthrown by a gang of rebels.
