The lesson learned from Nina Simone and Sky Brown is by rebelling against oppression you would be changing the world and give others hope. Where these women lived their lives was very important. It shaped the battles they fought and who they were. Who they were changed the world. Nina Simone experienced racism and Sky Brown experienced sexism. Nina Simone rebelled by singing and writing poetry about the merits of Black Culture. Sky Brown rebelled by becoming a great skateboarder. Both refused to do what was told by their cultures. Both the Southern U.S, and Japan are traditional cultures with prejudices and it affected both Sky and Nina to grow up in those environments. Nina Simone was from the Southern U.S. and it made her furious that
...ing to survive. Their militant demeanor and strong willed nature foreshadowed the coming modern civil rights movement. They realized the importance of education and utilized it to change the climate of their time. I think these to women defined the term "ordinary to extraordinary". They had both broke through color and gender barriers and earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, politicians the African American people. Who knows what would have happened if these two brave women did not stand up and accomplish what they had done. Would "White Supremacy" prevail in a post WWII society. It is hard to quantify the contribution of these women to the civil rights movement but I think it is safe to say that we were fortunate as a nation to have these great crusaders, as well as many other notable figures, to educate us and force us to see change in the United States.

According to Ruth Feldstein “Nina Simone recast black activism in the 1960’s.” Feldstein goes on to say that “Simone was known to have supported the struggle for black freedom in the United States much earlier, and in a more outspoken manner around the world than many other African American entertainers.” Her family ties to the south, her unique talent, her ability to travel and make money are similar to the Blues women movement that preceded her. It can be said that Nina Simone goes a step further the by directly attacking inequities pertaining to race and gender in her music. However, what distinguishes her is her unique musicianship and that is what ultimately garners her massive exposure and experiences over those of her past contemporaries.

You'd never gone to have any difficulties reminding her, as her goddess-like face is all that you need to remember. But when that mouth opens to sing songs, then it's a whole new level to like her even more than you expect. Her musical inclination is not just about singing by playing an impressive set of instruments on the likes of keyboard and piano, guitar, ukulele and even trombone.
At that time, Viola Desmond was the one of the only successful black canadian business woman and beautician in Halifax because there are were very few careers offered to the black. She Attended Bloomfield High school and also, studied in a program from Field Beauty Culture School, located in Montreal. These schools were one of the only academies that accepted black students. After she graduated, she promoted and sold her products because she wanted expanded her business;she also sold many of her products to her graduates. In addition, she opened a VI’s studio of beauty culture in Halifax.
Racism and the sense to fulfill a dream has been around throughout history. Langston Hughes’s poems “Harlem” and “I, Too” both depict the denial of ethnicity mix in society and its impact on an African American’s dream. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” uses jazz music to tie the belief of one’s intention and attainment to the black race. The two main characters are different in a way of one fitting into the norm of the American Dream and the other straying away from such to fulfill his own dream. All three pieces of writing occur during the same time in history in which they connect the black race with the rejection of the American Dream and the opportunity to obtain an individual effort by a culture.
Over and over again critics write about Nina Simone’s power and charisma throughout the Civil Rights Movement. She sang the words of an entire movement, “All I want is equality/ for my sister, my brother, my people, and me./ Yes, you lied to me all these years”(Simone Mississippi). She sang out for her entire race, and with a “smoky- toned” voice, when four young girls were killed in a church bombing (Lewis). She sang “Will my country fall, stand or fall?/ Is it too late for us all?/ And did Martin Luther King just die in vain? (Simone Why?) after the death of MLK. Nina Simone… a singer with many different voices, a singer who denies categorization, a woman who is genre-less to prove a point.
Ruby Bridges is one of the very many people who has changed history. Bridges has helped desegregate schools all around the world. She still stands today, sharing her thoughts and ideas to stop racism and segregation. Ruby’s life has had many ups, and downs, but she still seems to look on the bright side in almost every situation. Whites threatened and harshly criticized brave, confident, heroic American activist, Ruby Bridges for being one of the first African-American children to enter the William Frantz Elementary School, a school for white students, which helped end segregation in schools. Without Ruby Bridges, our schools may still be segregated to this day.

People still remember Bessie Coleman today for her bravery, courage, and her leadership. Bessie showed these outstanding traits she had, by not always thinking of herself. She did not go with the flow as we say it in the year 2014. She did what she believed was right. She stood up and told the person who was in charge to let the colored or Native Americans watch her perform. That is why Bessie Coleman is important in the world.
Being an African American during the 1930’s was tuff. Countless people were treated like animals and that’s why they never thought they had rights. It wasn’t until high school that they figured out what they can do. My biggest inspiration is Leon Walter Tillage because he stood up for something not many people would do in his time.
In the early 1900’s, women and African Americans did not have any rights. When standing up for their rights they were sometimes punished for their views. It was also undesirable for women to speak in public. However, that did not stop Sarah and Angelina Grimke, because they believed in their rights and that they could change these social statuses. They were the first prominent female abolitionists. They faced hardships like sexism and traitors because they were both women and against slavery.

She refused to let fear eat at her and inflict in her the weakness that poisoned her family. As a child she was a witness to too much violence and pain and much too often she could feel the hopelessness that many African Americans felt. She was set in her beliefs to make choices freely and help others like herself do so as well.
Who is your idol? Who inspires you? For many young adults in the 60s, Joan Baez was their inspiration. Out of all the people helping in the civil rights movement Joan Baez inspired young adults the most. Joan Baez didn’t believe in fighting, but she did want what was right for everyone. In addition, Joan Baez wrote music talking about political issues and how she hopes that one day we will get over these hardships. For many people Joan Baez was a voice for those who were too afraid to speak up.
“History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” A quote by the famous poet, author, singer, dancer, and actress Maya Angelou. Maya being an African American woman that was also a civil rights activist has had a great effect on history herself. During the fight for African American civil rights Maya worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X and will be known as a crucial factor for Africans gaining their rights. Maya Angelou has had a serious effect on history during her lifetime, and she will continue to play a vital role in the nation's history to come.
