No one is required to stand for something that they do not believe in. The United States of America flag symbolizes so much but due to our right of freedom no one technically has to stand for it. It’s not disrespectful to kneel for the flag because everyone is entitled to their own option, their freedom of speech, and the right to feel how they want about the flag and the United States. Every U.S. citizen has the right to their own in depth options on whether they want to stand or kneel for the National Anthem. Kneeling for the anthem isn’t wrong. I truly believe that Trump is the whole reason for players to start kneeling trying to protest racial injustice during the national anthem. Trumps smart remark on calling the players SOBS should’ve never taken place. Him being the president of the United States he should’ve tried to cancel out all the negativity on the fact instead of trying to make more complications and not withdrawing the real issue. He honestly criticized the black community as a whole when he stood on a political podium and called the players SOBS. This criticized the black community because the players that knelt were African Americans. Anthem is a story of man’s struggle to be free and to fight the masses of conformity. It tells of human nature and the want to gain all the knowledge that one could possibly attain. Man loses his safe haven and his security when he lets this lust for knowledge overpower him and lets it be seen by others. He becomes vulnerable Like Johann Faust, Prometheus sells his life for wisdom. Unlike Faust, however, Prometheus is expelled from his society but gains his freedom of individuality and his freedom of knowledge and the ability to understand. Gwen Wilde wrote an essay on “Why the Pledge of Allegiance Should be Revised.” In this essay, Gwen believes that the words “under God” should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. Gwen informs us that the original Pledge did not include “under God” and the words were not added until 1942, therefore, the words can easily be removed. Although some changes have been made to make it clear that the Pledge of Allegiance is for the United States Gwen believes that the words “under God” do not show any support for our country and only make those who do not believe in God feel uncomfortable. Therefore, Gwen believes that “under God” is not appropriate for the Pledge and does not show that we are a Nation that is “indivisible.”

I feel that kneeling shows how unappreciative those NFL players are. They get to go play the most popular sport in America for millions of dollars. The Star Spangled Banner is a sacred song in the United States of America. It not only is a symbol of the fight that soldiers have had to go through, but also a representation of freedom. When the National Anthem plays out of respect for our country, and those who fought for it, everyone is supposed to stand and remove their hats. Currently in the National Football League (NFL) there is a handful of players, mainly African Americans, that have been taking a knee or raising a fist during the play of our National Anthem. This I believe, is a great sign of disrespect for our country and our veterans. This I believe, is very immature and unnecessary. This I believe, should be put to a stop by the NFL and the players should be ashamed of himself for doing this. During the Vietnam War, activists ironically demolished the flag to bring back the men fighting overseas. The same men who were fighting for the freedoms of Americans and the symbol of America. These soldiers believed in America as a country and the flag as a badge of democracy and freedom so much, they risked their lives and almost 60,000 American soldiers died to preserve America’s freedoms.
The First Amendment should not protect burning a respected object such as the American flag. By burning the flag, you are basically contradicting your expression. Why would you be burning a symbol of freedom and then insist that it is your right to burn your freedom. It does not make any sense to burn a well know symbol of freedom and then say that it is your right to burn it. Also, it is extremely disrespectful to burn an American flag unless it is ripped or damaged, not as a result of some ridiculous symbolism act. The bottom line about respecting the American flag is to remember what it stands for and to be mindful of what it took to receive the high honor it holds today.
When the morning announcements come on and say, “Please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance,” people normally don’t think anything of it, but to stand up and recite a few lines to something they learned in kindergarden. However, some people may feel it is wrong to say the Pledge based upon a religion that they practice. Requiring students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance does violate the First Amendment due to the fact that they are protected under the Freedom of Speech clause. This is seen through The Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow case, The West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette case, and The Massachusetts Supreme Court case. In a parade, the flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle, railroad train, or boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender. When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms and should be stored folded neatly and ceremoniously. Is it right to burn one of the country's symbols, but should it be legal since it is part of the freedom of speech? Since the first day this country was free everyone looked at the flag as the reason why, but at the same time it isn’t the real reason. Our country is free because of the people who fought for it. Proving that burning the flag is disrespectful, but it gives people a way to express themselves. It should be legal because it gives people a way to communicate with the upper class, and if it is illegal they will protest and keep their same actions.
Admittedly, waving the flag and singing the national anthem are not wrong things to do. These actions promote unity and raise moral. However, love for the country can be focused in ways that are much more productive. "Patriotism can no longer be defined by whether you think this is the greatest country in the world" (Gesford, 1). An act of patriotism must accomplish something. Making a personal sacrifice is an example. Donating money or joining the army would certainly benefit the country more than waving a flag.
