I laid there waiting, the moment I dreaded, the doctor walking through the door. I am a competitive athlete and spend a large chunk of my life playing sports, so lying in the doctor's office with a knee injury was my worst fear. The knob on the door turns, “Well, from how you described it and by the way it looks, my best assumptions without any further tests, is it’s your ACL.” My heart sunk, terrible news, what to do, what to think. I wanted to break down but I was stronger than that. I looked at that situation two ways, one being negative, telling myself that I am going to be out of sports for my senior year, or, the positive, I will have to work extremely hard to avoid surgery to continue my sports career. Turns out tearing my ACL was the best thing that has ever happened to me. Many people can fall down after tragic injury, however, in my case, I did the complete opposite. I did things most teenage kids would not even consider doing. I woke up every morning drove to physical therapy before 6:00 a.m. and then made my way to school. This injury happened halfway through my basketball season and being our only pitcher for our softball team and softball being right around the corner, this injury was very traumatic to me. This gave me the perfect opportunity to chose a meaningful resolution. I chose to become healthier. This may seem like the most basic goal that many never reach, but I was determined to stick to it. My doctor and therapist both repeatedly talked of surgery, I knew that I was going to have to do whatever it would take to avoid it. Christmas break was a week long, throughout the break my family and peers all felt sorrow for me, that was the last thing I had wanted. This pushed me to heal even faster.
