There are some things that happen in your life that you aren’t ready for. Teenagers believe that they are invincible. When some find out that they really aren’t, it can affect their life. I use to think I was invincible. Sure, getting scrapes and bruises was no big deal to me, but I was not ready for what was going to happen. Growing up, I played softball, basketball, volleyball, and track competitively. I was addicted to sports. They were my life all year round and I was ecstatic to play all of my sports for my high school.
With the rest of the basketball girls from the surrounding area, I began summer basketball camp. There was a basketball tournament where we played 4 games in one day. During the game an opponent stole the ball, so I chased her down the court. Once I reached her under their basket, I tripped over her foot, fell, and heard something snap. I was absolutely freaking out. The referees ran down to me. All I could say was “Something popped! Something popped!” I couldn’t bend my leg at the knee, it was scary. I was brought to the main lobby to walk it off. I couldn’t bend my leg for two weeks.
Once I could bend my knee again, I started playing sports again. I took a break from basketball, but I kept up with softball and volleyball. My knee didn’t feel quite the same, but I thought that would pass. During my volleyball camp at Olivet Nazarene University, I was jumping up to block and when I landed my knee buckled and I knocked over my friend Christie. I could not believe this happened again! After I couldn’t get up, once again, the coach insisted that I go and see Ozzy, the trainer. He checked out my knee and thought I had torn my meniscus(the cartilage in the knee joint) and possibly had a small tear in my MCL(the inside tendon of the knee). He insisted that I go to O.A.K. Orthopedics (a health care office that includes 8 orthopedic surgeons) to see Dr. Ellis.
I wasn’t afraid to go see the Doctor, because I thought I knew what was wrong. I was told it would only take up to four weeks to heal. Dr. Ellis told me the same thing that Ozzy did, but I got an x-ray first, just to make sure there were no fractures or broken bones.
In November of 2010, I was playing basketball in the fifth game of my senior season. It was just like any other game. However, I would soon find out otherwise. It was late in the game; I drove into the lane and got fouled hard. I was knocked so off-balance that I speared the floor with my knee. As soon as my knee hit the floor I heard a “snap” that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Little did I know at the time, that would be the last shot of my high school basketball career. Not long after my injury, I consulted a doctor. After getting an x-ray and an MRI, the doctor informed me that I had completely torn my ACL and would need to have surgery. An ACL tear can be a very devastating injury. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments within the knee. The ACL is one of the most commonly injured ligaments, injured by an estimated 200,000 patients each year. Of the 200,000 annual ACL injuries, surgery is performed in approximately 100,000 cases. There are many types of reconstructive surgery on the ACL. However, there is an alternative to surgery in the form of physical therapy.
Earlier in the spring I was playing a soccer game against the South Anchorage varsity soccer team. I was playing left midfield, taking the ball up the left side of the field when the other team’s right fullback stepped up to get the ball. I cut to the right and heard a loud snap that rung in my ears. I could not stand up. Every time I tried to move my leg, waves of pain pounded from my knee. I had to be carried off the pitch. I learned a few days later
So i have therapy mondays and wednesday. And when i went back that monday my therapist was surprised of how good i’ve gotten, because i was able to move my knee more and bend my knee more than 70%. She told me that it was good but my goal is 120% or more, for me to get to the next step of surgery. So i focused on that, and i was putting in twice as much as work i usually put in. Because the only thing that's on my mind is to get back on the field and work my way to become stronger and better. Also do what i love to do and enjoy playing with my friends and family. That's the only thing i’m striving for is to come back healthy and strong. And not do the same mistake as i did before to put myself in that situation. Finally almost that time for me to receive a phone call from my sergeant to tell me what i should do before i come in for surgery. She told me to not eat or drink once it's 7:00 because i was scheduled to have surgery at 9:30 and also she told me not to put on any lotion on my knees. So i did what she asked me to, and that whole day i been thinking about what is going to happen and would i ever be the same and how would it take for me to come back and be fully healed. So i went to the hospital it was almost time for me to have surgery and i was kind of scared but i was really looking forward to just get it all over with it. After i got done with surgery i was in so much pain that couldn’t move at all. Because if i even tried to move my leg that i would be in so much pain that i have to drink my pain killers. Once i got home i was in so much pain that i didn’t sleep for a whole week straight. But then i started getting used to sleeping without a problem or pain. But my doctor would always called me and told me what to do or if i had any problem to just give her a call. Then i asked her the next day when i could start walking and stuff. She
My mother took me to see a back specialist named, Dr. Johnson at the Knoxville Orthopedic Center in Knoxville, TN who explained this pain I was having generated a major problem. It never came to my realization how serious this could be, or what it could do to my basketball career.
Amanda was in her sophomore year of soccer season when she heard the pop of her knee that cut her season short. The next thing she knew she was at the doctor’s who told her she had an ACL tear, and wasn’t sure if she could play again. From there it was boiled down to two options. One to re-strengthen her knee through rehabilitation, physical therapy and bracing, or to undergo an ACL reconstruction surgery. Although it is costly and some may consider it frivolous, those who have encountered ACL tears should receive the reconstruction surgery instead of attending rehabilitation for the damage to their knee, because it dramatically lessens the chances of meniscal injuries and osteoarthritis occurring later and allows the patient to return back to their sport or physical activity with better knee mobility and less pain in a timely manner.
During the ninth grade, I injured my knee playing soccer. The initial MRI did not show any tears, but the orthapedic surgeon did notice I was weak medially and that my patella was tracking laterally. He sent me to therapy to strengthen the inside of my leg and hopefully pull my kneecap medially. I started going to therapy and I adored my therapist, Kelley. Even though the exercises weren’t always fun or pain free I looked forward to therapy. She made things fun, and since I was interested in the field, would explain why I was doing certain exercises compared to others. The pain didn’t go away and she worked to help figure ...
The summer before my fourth grade year I was attending a basketball camp at Davidson College, when in the final seconds of a scrimmage game, my ankle was kicked out from under me. I immediately fell to the ground in pain as my ankle rolled over on itself. Coaches aided me in limping off of the court and to the training room
High School sports allow a student to have a chance at not only increasing or maintaining physical fitness, but to be able to spend time with friends and fellow students to be able to work together to accomplish a goal that cannot be accomplished by individual efforts. For parents, sports can help their child by surrounding them with influences that support and promote good behavior both on and off the field/court. However, just because sports offer adolescents positive influences and rules to follow doesn’t mean that the students will decide to abide by these rules even though they are usually the logical and correct choice to make. Some student athletes still feel that there is a need to rebel against such rules, which usually results in the athletes being deprived of the sport or sports that the athletes deeply cherish. While a teenager in athletics has the opportunity to achieve their athletic goals without risk from outside activities, there are those who choose to allow those risks to destroy their personal goals and dreams in their high school athletic careers.
Instead of wallowing in my misery, I took initiative and made the most of my situation. One should never worry about what they can’t control. Aside from the social life issues due to my injury, I had to attend therapy for my rehabilitation. When I first started putting pressure on my ankle and flexing, I was as white as a ghost, deathly afraid that I might hurt it again. But eventually, as time went on and my physical therapist provided words of encouragement, I was able to trust my body again and have faith that my ankle would allow me to do what I was able to do before the injury. Since I had never dealt with having an action or movement temporarily taken from me, it was hard to take that first step again. Imagine standing at the edge of a cliff and staring down at an abyss. What’s down there is unknown to you and so you are unsure if you should jump or not. This was the predicament I found myself in when I had to walk to my physical therapist who stood a couple of feet away. I had to reach down inside myself and find the courage and bravery that I knew was in
The first time she was not sure and thought it was only ligament or muscles torn in my neck and shoulder or tendon damage. Neither sounded good to me, but after time went on and it was not much better she thought it was more serious; she was the first to suggest it could be separated at the growth plate and, I was sent for an MRI scan. Near the time of the first game I was told to stop attending training, because I could not play. They thought I would not be able to take part at all that season .This was very hard to deal with; I felt I had missed an opportunity to develop my game. I knew my season was over
Not even thinking I jumped of the rock wall. When i jumped my left foot rolled and I barely could walk on it. It hurt like I just cut my ankle off. All of the parents around us where asking if I were okay and I said "It really hurts" and they called my mom and my moms came with an ice pack said, " are you okay I was so worried, " I told her it hurt t really bad". All my friends asked if I were okay before my mom took me to the emergency room. I didn't really want to go to the doctor, but I knew I had to. We had to wait thirty minutes until they called my name. They took me back to a room and they looked at my ankle when they said you need a x-ray. I went into the x-ray room it was kinda of dark and dim. When he told me to lay down on this weird bed thing and I had to lay my foot out. He went
On 12/12/16 I met Mr. McClellan and his step dad at the office of Dr. Nzoma. The MRI was reviewed. There is a partial tear of the ACL. There is some popping but examination showed good strength and stability. Dr. Nzoma would like physical therapy to continue to help him wean out of the brace and to work on the popping. We discussed a return to work and restrictions were written.
He was doing some tests on me to see exactly what was going on in my ankle, he was pulling from different spots and asking me if I felt pain when all of a sudden he pulled a certain spot and my whole ankle popped out of socket. Luckily it went right back into place but when that happened it hurt extremely bad and the doctor said ”That's not supposed to happen”. He had determined the problem. The good news is that we can fix it, the bad news is that it will be a long road to repair properly. He told me that one of my lateral ligaments was ripped from the bone and giving my ankle no support, and told me I would need surgery for it to be
Losing a knee Junior year was one of my best and worst years, I was back on the wrestling team and I was motivated to have a good year all around. This did not go as I had planned. In the middle of the year I dealt with relationship problems, my grandma getting cancer, and I think what affected my self the most besides my grandma, was tearing my meniscus during wrestling season, that easily affected me the most junior year.
It was the start of summer 2002, and the Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) national tournament was taking place in Andover, Kansas. Along with the rest of the team, I was excited to play some basketball for the first time since the middle school basketball season was over. Our team, Carlon Oil, had been together and played every summer for the last four years. We were a really good team, with an overall record of 65-4 over those four years and were hoping to continue our legacy. Lonnie Lollar, our coach for the summer, was also the coach of our high school basketball team. I had a history of groin injuries, and every summer it seemed that I would have to sit out at least a game on the bench icing my groin. But this summer was different, and I along with everyone in the gym wouldn't have expected my summer to end with a injury such as a broken leg.
