On May 16, 2014 Narendra Modi was elected in a landslide victory as the newest Prime Minister of India. The largest victory in more than thirty years, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 282 seats in Parliament and will have majority rule. Modi enters office after a successful term as the Chief Minister of the Indian state Gujarat. While in office, Modi ushered in many new developments that have helped spur economic revitalization in the state. Because Modi has little foreign policy experience, it is difficult to predict what his relationship will be like with the international community. If recent news is any indication it appears that Modi is looking to develop cooperative partnerships with many nations. In the U.S., Barack Obama called Modi shortly after he won the election and invited the Prime Minister to the US for bilateral talks. Narendra Modi appears to be doing everything necessary to point India in the right direction; however, his true identity will be tested when India inevitably faces a crisis situation.

Venkatesh paints an image of a community abandoned by the state and left with highly-skilled and manipulative robbers who exploit their neighbors for private gains while being hypocritical and championing the values of community and togetherness. Venkatesh’s personality unlocks many doors for him that one can’t help but think if it’s not an elaborate act that he pretends to be very ignorant of everything hoping that others will take it upon themselves and show him up. However, if his innocent personality is actually a research tool then he gives no indication of it in the book, when at times it even got him into some trouble. This book appealed to me in an interesting

Mahbubani argues that global dominance is moving to the east primarily due to the United States incompetence (weakness) and growing capability of Asian nations. He furthers this notion by strongly indicating that the West is inhibiting Asian progress. Mahbubani further indicates that the west has lost its legitimacy due to violating international protocol. Mahbabani recommends a return to domestic good governance and specifies that some Asian countries are now ready to join the west in becoming “responsible custodian” (pp. 4) of the global order.
India is well known as a nation of contrasts, and the nation itself is a paradox. It is one of the world’s oldest known civilizations, yet it has only existed as the nation the world now know sit for 67 years. Similarly, it has produced some of the most important contributions to mathematics, science, philosophy, and trade, yet it is still considered to be a developing nation. The country’s history is a long, winding journey that has led it to its current state – the world’s largest democracy featuring both the same technological advancements enjoyed by the first world and the same challenges and problems faced by the rest of the developing world.

Mahatma Gandhi was a man of faith and great conviction. He was born into an average Hindu family in India. Like most teenagers he had a rebellious stage when he smoked, spent time with girls and ate meat (forbidden to strict Hindus). The young Gandhi changed as a person while earning a living as a lawyer in South Africa. He came in contact with the apartheid and the future Mahatma began to emerge, one who championed the truth through non-violent resistance. It was between 1915 and his assassination in 1945 that he struggled for India's freedom.
Overall India’s recent political environment has been largely unstable due to international events & continued tension with Pakistan.
