Who am I? Can I be put into one box and not the other? Do I need to be boxed in at all? Does being one thing preclude being something else? Is it necessary for a woman to choose to be this OR that? Can’t she be this AND that? Do we need labels at all? Can you define the essence of a person? A human being is multifaceted, changes with time, a mood and a situation. It’s almost cruel to box someone in or be surprised at their interest in this OR that. I’m a mother three times over AND I’m still the girl I was. I’ve been a loving wife AND now I’m divorced. I’m a swimmer AND I have long hair. I teach English, German and yoga AND I learn. I grow tomatoes and roses and make compost out of eggshells and papaya peels AND I drive, all over town and out of it, at any time of the day or night. photographer I’m a photographer, late to the game and a little unsure of how good other people think they are, although I love them AND I rescue stray dogs, home them, love them and feed them. I love dogs AND I love cats. I’m a foot reflexologist AND a writer. I’m a Buddhist AND an activist. I chant AND I march on the streets holding banners. I’m a feminist and I embrace the term despite the negative connotations it has, AND I’m feminine – I wear make up, ear rings and high heels and refuse to cut my hair short despite the scorn of every hair dresser I’ve ever been to. By the way, since when are feminist and feminine mutually exclusive terms? The food is good, the air clean, the sunshine warm, the nights chill and the sights spectacular. AND I’m an international travel junkie – say ‘NYC’ and my eyes light up. Say ‘London’ and I shudder with delight. Berlin, Vienna, Florence, Melbourne cause me to tremble with pleasure. Rio, Buenos Aires, Helsinki, Havana, Tokyo and St. Petersburg are calling and I hope to see them all. I’m a health freak – yoga and good nutrition are driving forces in my life AND I’m not averse to chocolate, cupcakes and coffee. I drink more than eight glasses of water a day and at night the long stemmed goblets are filled with red wine, and emptied. Reading is a passion and the prose must be beautiful – Murakami, Nadeem Aslam, Jeffrey Eugenides, Kiran Desai, Dickens AND so are films and television whether Castle, Monk, Grey’s Anatomy, Downton Abbey, The Hunger Games, Gone Girl and PK. Sarees I adore because of the glamour they evoke AND jeans, tights and boots AND summer dresses – strappy and frilly AND elegant and black. Pearls, opals, antique jewelry AND silly costume jewelry – jangly bracelets, hoop ear rings and outsize cocktail rings. Did somebody say I have to choose – one or the other? Do we need to listen?
