Being in a situation where mobility is compromised can bring much social psychological and physical suffering. My passion is to make people feel comfortable with their abilities and embrace the joys of life. I want to continue to enable people who are discouraged by limited by their mobility by showing them the appropriate health strategies and adaptive equipment to make it possible to live a rewardingly rich and meaningful lifestyle. I want to give people back their security and safety, while making life feel as natural as possible. I want people to feel comfortable throughout their lives. It is hard to live with disability, because everyday things become a challenge. U.S. Census Bureau report from 2008 states that 3.3 million non-institutionalized Americans over age 15 years use wheelchairs. The reason why there are so many people with disabilities is that U.S. spent decades at war. This is why mobility industry is rethinking the products it provides to support a growing demographic. During the first two years of high school, I volunteered for various clubs to discover my interests. At the time, clubs seemed similar to hobbies that American teenagers enjoy to pursue rather than develop practical skills. Reaching my second year, I joined the Kaiser Junior volunteering program after unexpectedly running into volunteers during a visit at Kaiser, and it left a warming impression that inspired me to sign up for the program. I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it. For my volunteer experience I chose to help assist in a program called the Sonshine Club that’s provided in one of the local city schools Kenwood Heights Elementary School. My passion for volunteering has grown steadily throughout my four years of attending high school. I viewed volunteering as an escape from problems at school and home and focused on bettering the lives of other individuals. By joining a variety of volunteering opportunities, one club strongly impacted my perspective on the lives of others, Best Buddies. One way to ensure a civically engaged population is to nurture and promote amongst youth and teenagers the value of participating in one’s community, with the hope that involvement will continue into adulthood. Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
Have you ever felt a desire to lend a helping hand for your community? If only all people felt like this, schools might not have to require hundreds of hours of volunteer work from their high school students. Across the country, more schools are requiring mandatory volunteer service as an additional graduation requirement for these students. Although volunteer work can be very beneficial for the community, the extra work should not be required for high school students because they will be caused greater stress, will have less academic focus, and they will have less time for their needs.
What I discovered about myself, is that I have a personality type of a “protagonist”. The “Protagonist” basically describes myself adequately, as they find it easy to communicate with others, natural born leaders, and are full of charisma. “Class,” I announced, “today I will teach you a simpler method to find the greatest common factor and the least common multiple of a set of numbers.” In fifth grade, my teacher asked if anyone had any other methods to find the greatest common factor of two numbers. I volunteered, and soon the entire class, and teacher, was using my method to solve problems. Teaching my class as a fifth grader inspired me to teach others how important math and science is. Watching people receive toys and gifts for their kids to open on Christmas Day, showed me what that day can look like through a parent’s lense. Anybody that knows me knows that my passion and goals in life have to deal with fashion. If I could be anything in this world I would love to be a designer of some sort or at least be in the industry. When it comes to clothing and style it just comes easy one of the easiest things I’m good at. Fashion is an art form it allows you to express your view on style anyway you choose. And to me I feel like nobody has the right to judge that. Style hasn’t always come easy to be though just like everything else it takes time and practice it’s still a work in progress. When I look back to my middle school and early high school years I wonder deeply about my choices, middle school had to have been the worst. I was going through a colored jeans faze, I would wear bright yellow, honey mustard yellow, sky blue, purple, and pink. If somebody were to name a color I probably had jeans that color. It gets worse though because I would have the worst possible combination choice of shoes to go along with a matching bead necklace and bracelet set, followed by a grey or navy blue uniform shirt. It’s clear I had no idea what I was doing the best part is I was being myself and that’s all that matters. No matter how much I think my style has grown I’m only human and will look back and probably wonder why I wore the outfit I’m wearing sitting here writing this essay.
