Society is defined as “a group of people who shape their lives in aggregated and patterned ways that distinguish their group from others” (Ferris, 2008). It is possible to place society in a single definition, but the magnifying glass in which one views it is different. As humans, our perception of society is heavily shaped by various life structures. Religion, family status, and education are structures I found most prominent in my life. Through these three structures, I sort of defined myself and my perspective on the world. Religion brought spirituality in my life, family status taught me humbleness, and education imparted the importance of hard-work to achieve your dreams. Religion, ultimately, shapes your moral compass. It is I feel very thankful for the education I am receiving as some of my relatives in the Philippines are not able to get one. The accessibility of education in America is something you should not take for granted. I have become very appreciate of my parents for making the journey here to America. They not only provided a future for me, but they tried to find the best possible one. As mentioned before, I went to a private school for high school. At this time, I was being viewed as privileged. I was in a safe, well-educated school that provided me with many opportunities. If I were in public school, I think I would have been hanging around the wrong crowd and getting caught up in distractions detrimental to my education. However, I did want to experience public high school as I felt very sheltered in private school. Regardless, I was content in my situation. I was given great counseling from the staff and life advice. It was a situation where it assists me in excelling in the real world. My education in private school went beyond the textbook. “In the most basic sense, education is important in society because without the obtainment of a high school diploma, GED or College Degree, an individual will invariably face barriers and impediments regarding their ability to obtain a job” (Importance of Education, 2017). Ultimately, being in an educated system gives you hope for a successful future. Because of their ideology, my parents were very firm on getting me an education to pursue my career. I initially saw school as something everyone must go through. However, my parents displayed symbolic interactionism by telling me that education beyond high school is extremely important and not everyone can handle it. However, this constant pressure left me with anxiousness and fear of failure. I did not want to let my parents down, so I did my best to get the best grades I can get in school.
