Introduction This paper is a reflection of my father’s life experiences and how they shaped his beliefs, values, and character. Through phone conversations and a few detailed emails, he described a life full of adventure, growth and learning. His memories touch upon social, political, and personal experiences throughout the past four decades (1960s-1990s). 1960’s During the 1960’s my family was in the United States visiting family. A few of his friends decided to attend a local fair, my father was excited to socialize with Americans. Before entering the fair, my father stumbled on a few men playing card games. In reflection, he realizes they were confederacy members trying to make a few dollars in this community. After watching one of the three men win the card game several times, my father decided to play. The first game he won, which boosted his confidence. Unfortunately, he lost every game thereafter including the money he put aside to pay for his entrance into the fair. He helped his older sister buy her first home there. After initially agreeing to lend his sister $7,000 he took out a second mortgage on his house. However, once all parties meet at the lawyers’ office, my father noticed that the documents totaled over $9,000. All parties negotiated a new price and my father signed blank documents to speed up the process. Later, he found out they took a sum of $19,000. His relationship with his sister has never been the same
