A couple named Rick and Sarah live in a small lodge in the backwoods of Alabama. They are your typical family with a son, Troy, and a daughter, Melissa. They all live together, and everyone works except for Melissa who is fourteen.
It was your typical Alabama kind of day. The wind whistling through the trees, birds chirping, bugs humming. Melissa talks to her mom about how Jenifer is a man-stealing, good-for-nothing-jerk in the kitchen while they both get supper ready. A van pulls up in the driveway, startling Rick. The men jump out of the car and pound on his door. Rick waves everyone to go hide and opens the door.
“Congratulation you won one million dollars!” The game show host announces to Rick.
“What?” Rick says befuddled. “Why did we win a million dollars?”
“We won a million dollars!” Melissa shouted. “Who cares why, thank you sir.” Rick slaps Melissa’s hand away from the check.
“Go back and get your mother.” Rick said. “Do you know anything about this dear?”
“Yes I will explain later, thank you sirs very much.” Sarah said taking the check closing the door.
“What did you do?” Rick said.
“I went to the library and entered the all the pop tarts code we had.”
“Oh okay, why didn’t you tell me we won?”
“Surprise.” Sarah laughed.
The next morning Rick brought everyone to the bank. The wait in the line was making the Galbrith family’s joy hard to hold in.
“Come on.” murmured Rick.
“Calm down sweetie.” Sarah grabbing and holding onto Rick’s arm.
“Next!” The bank teller said.
“I would like to cash a check,” Rick said. He hands her the check with so much eagerness, he catches his hand while bring up the ch...

“Follow me!” Troy said running. The third guy chased after him, ducking and leaping over brush and branches. “Here!” Troy developed a pride within him because he outran a trained paramedic and might have saved his father’s life. The two with the stretcher were not far behind and the man with Troy rushed near Rick to check his pulse.
“I am sorry sir, nothing.” Tears rushed to Troy’s eyes.
“I should have waited! This is my fault.” Troy said. “I could have done something.”
“You got a mom or a guardian that we can speak too?”
“Yeah, mom is going to be crushed.” Troy said walking back slowly. Hesitating every step as tears flood his eyes.
“Come on son, we got to go back.” The paramedic urged him.
“I can’t see! Go on without me. ”
When she was a little girl her father was struck by lightening while working in the field. He died. Her mother tried to farm after that, but it didn't work out. Her mother remarried to a man. The family moved to Memphis to live with the man their mother married, their stepfather. He already had a wife. She also lived in Memphis. They weren't divorced, but he said they were.
