At the time I didn't realize it but Speech and Language Pathologists have been a big part of my life since I was a child. When I was in elementary school it was discovered by a dentist that I had an orofacial myofunctional disorder that was causing my tongue to push on my front teeth triggering a massive overbite. Around the same time my brother, from the very start of his language development, was developing a severe stutter. As young children with these impairments life was just a little more difficult. I had other students mock and make fun of the way I looked and my brother got the same from his peers as well as frustrations from adults who did not have the patience to listen to him. I have become very interested in the world of augmentative and alternative communication. With my background as a software developer, I have started thinking about and developing ways that alternative communication could be easier for children and adults through the use of software. I have witnessed how frustrating it can be for a person who is not able to communicate their thoughts, ideas, and feelings appropriately and I enjoy thinking about ways that I could help them solve this problem. Another field of study I have become interested in after completing a language science and development course is orofacial myofunctional disorders. It was during this course that I realized that this was what I had as a child and became very fascinated in my research of these disorders. I am also very interested in working in pediatric speech and language settings. I believe that communication is one of the most important things we have as humans. It is what sets us apart. Communication is key in building relationships, in school or workplace settings, as a citizen of your community, and a number of different areas. Due to the importance of having the ability to communicate through speech or language and the struggles of not being able to do so gives me an immense desire to help children overcome their communication
