My Educational Journey

The story of my life begins on the 16th of May in 1987 at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. It was evident to me that growing up in a single parent home with two kids was going to be a difficult road to travel. As I began school I gradually developed my love of learning and used this passion to escape the difficulties of life outside the classroom. Though my earliest educational journey had resulted in me attending 6 different school, as I looked to obtain my High School Diploma, I continued working on my goal of going to college. By my senior year, I was still undecided as to which school I would like to attend for my collegiate career and how I was going to be able to pay for my education.

I am currently on course for a University Studies degree with my three concentrations being Personal Financial Planning, Organizational Leadership, and Human Resource Development. Although, these courses are very different from my initial major—accounting—they each have concepts and theories of which I can infuse with my understanding of the business world. Also, in most businesses each of my three concentrations play a key role in the development of the company. The transition from Rawls College of Business to University Studies has humbled me tremendously. I can honestly say that when I began at Texas Tech University I was completely narrow minded to the options and routes of which I could take to achieve my ultimate goal of having a well-paying, stable career. However, as I continued my collegiate career in the face of adversity I have found it helpful to keep my ideas and thoughts focused on the goals that I set for myself upon my first year in attendance at Texas Tech. The key to reaching my goal of obtaining a business degree is to remain resilient. The road maybe a little longer than I had originally had plan for but I have to “weather the storm” if I want to have any chance at achieving my goal. I have recently obtained a job at Buffalo Wild Wings as a Full-Time Server. The collaboration of work and school will have a lasting effect on me moving forward. For example, in my personal financial planning courses we are constantly discussing various money management resources and tools that we can use now that can help us later in life as we look to make bigger purchases. Also, my having a “college job” allows me to interact with the locals of Lubbock, TX in a way that I might not have
