I recently attended a music forum that was held at the front auditorium of Hudgins hall on April 28th, 2016. This forum was held to showcase a few styles of music by the students and faculty at Angelina College. The event had a maximum of 15 people in attendance but the music department still went on with a great show. The music forum consisted of 5 different acts of from vocals and piano to a small orchestra. Each individual performance was unique in its own way. Some were very simple but powerful; other was complex and ornamented. This was my second time attending a music forum and was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying this music forum more than the first on I attended. It made the show more intimate and close-knit. This probably made it easier for the performers because it eliminated “stage fright”. The stage was prefect for the occasion. There was no adjustments to be made in-between performances because all of the necessary equipment’s was all available. I also was very fond of the diversity of the music that was played at this music forum. There was multiple instruments played like the Piano, Trumpet, Clarinet, and the Euphonium. Additionally there were multiple voice tones like Baritone and Tenor. This variety also made the performance well worth attending. My favorite part of the entire forum was the last piece entitle “Lord of the Dance” by Ronan Hardiman. This song performance was the most dynamic and grand song that was played. The heavily ornamented song was performed by a total of 8 people, some of which had solo earlier. I really enjoyed the performers fully utilizing all available instruments to perform such an amazing song. This performance was hands down the highlight of forum. Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. In conclusion, it was a very unique experience for me to attend this concert. It was my first time listening to music in a church. The music was wonderful and played brilliantly. I now realize how talented some of the women composers were throughout the history of music. The experience of listening to such wonderful music firsthand was an honor. I hope to attend one in the near future.
Music is virtually everywhere we go, no matter if it is background noise in a coffee shop or singing along while shopping for groceries, we can find music somewhere. The event I attended was the Flint Symphony Orchestra on October 8, 2016. I have never attended a symphony before so I was excited to go, especially since I had invited my friend to attend with me. For this event, I was already informed by my teacher that the symphony will be formal so we needed to look the part since others will be dressed fancy. I have been to many different concerts throughout my life but this year I experienced two exceptionally unique ___ that I had never seen before. The first one was a spectacular chamber recital that took place at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed by pianist Yefim Bronfman and violist-violinist Pinchas Zukerman. The program included Schubert's Violin Sonatina No. 2 in A Minor, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, and Brahms’ Viola Sonata No. 1 in F Minor. The second was a performance by the notable quartet “Anonymous 4” presented by the Universality of Chicago at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The program included a series of medieval French motets from the 13th Century French polyphony, taken from the Montpellier Codex. The two performances were extremely different in nature and but at the same time very similar in what they were trying to achieve. This piece was filled with improvisation and you could feel the creativity following from the musicians. The combo didn’t have a conductor like the big band and was significantly smaller. Although, the combo was smaller and less formal it wasn’t any less of a performance. The piece started out with a phenomenal alto sax solo by Kevin Clements of Lamar, Missouri. Kevin is a talented musician, with his dark, rich sounding solo, he hit it out of the park. Ivan Vazquez of Garden City, Kansas performed another great solo on the trombone. Maddy Beasley, Kearney, Missouri followed Ivan with a tenor saxophone
The first song played was from a genre that I had previously taken a test on, Sonata. The musicians played the song by the book. There were three movements and polyphonic texture. It was even fast and jerky. Nonetheless, this is the part where my rollercoaster was going down. In my opinion it was boring. Although very well played, the song itself did not interest me. I did not like the roadrunner, coyote essence of the song. The piano accompaniment would sometimes play the melody and let the clarinet follow and then they would switch. This to me seemed force instead of like the Sonatas that I listened to in class. However, apart from the musical aspect of the first piece there was a certain intensity expressed by the performers. This time, there was vocal accompaniment to the second piece, which clearly made it much different than the other works that I listened to. The Lord Nelson Mass was one that I enjoyed more and I feel that is because of the choir that performed. Although it is not the type of music that I usually listen to, it still has some more similarities than the symphony by Mozart. The Lord Nelson Mass, composed by Haydn, was my favorite performance of the evening.

Over this semester, I attended two concerts. The first concert I went to was a performance done by the Swedish band Graveyard at the 9:30 club in DC. The second concert that I went to was at the George Mason Center for Performing Arts. This concert was a jazz competition between bands call The Battle of the Big Bands. Both concerts were performed very well and kept the audience, myself included, very entertained throughout the entire show. In this paper, I will be discussing each individual show in depth, and then continuing on to compare the two concerts.

The small setting and the crowd he was able to project his sound without having to use a huge amount of energy. What was really impressive to me was the fact every musician gave it all they had with their performances. I really enjoyed the energy of the musicians and the audience during the Christmas show. While most of the audience members seemed to enjoy the show, the atmosphere was not outwardly energetic or lively. Most songs attracted polite applause but no raucous cheering. This could potentially be due to the demographics of the audience; most attendees either seemed to be college students somehow connected to the charity cause or families seeking some entertainment for the evening. There seemed to be very few devoted fans of either band in attendance. Very few people were dancing, even though both bands encouraged the audience to get up and move around.
Then audience members who were perfect strangers who were screaming loudest would turn to each other with knowing glances and smile because they were sharing the same excitement and connecting with one another over their love of this man’s music. There was no pushing or shoving to get closer to the stage – it wasn’t that kind of crowd. Instead, there was mutual respect for one another’s space within the confines of the too-small venue. Nobody wanted to be the person who ruined it for someone else. It was this respect that made the audience members’ connections with one another that much stronger – we were all here to listen to this wonderful man’s music and see his performance – and, of course, we were here to enjoy it.
Though, I knew it wouldn’t be the same as a concert, I still intended it to be similar. To my surprise, it was a completely different atmosphere. Overall, I did enjoy it, but there were a few things I disliked. I wasn’t a fan that the majority of the songs performed by Anthony Lovano’s band had no words. I didn’t like this, because that is my favorite part about the concert; getting to sing along with the band. When only two songs had words, I was confused how the band could ever interact with the audience to build their reputation. This being said, that is the second part I disliked; lack of participation with the audience. A member of the band would announce the song being played, with few explaining the meaning behind it and then they’d perform. I disliked this because I always find it more entertaining to interact with the performers. I think it’s exciting when they let you sing part of the song, while they play the music or when they just talk to you about their day in between songs. Again, I have only ever gone to a concert before, so this is all I was able to base it off
