Multiculturalism denotes the understanding that cultural variances should be valued and encouraged rather than abated, erased, or quietened. Underlying multiculturalism is the belief that members of diverse cultures can live peacefully beside each other; assimilation is unnecessary, nor perhaps even desirable. A multicultural society is where different cultures exist alongside each other, frequently mingling and integrating a range of aspects that define other cultures. From this cultural blending comes a greater respect for each other’s culture, improves tolerance and develops a far more interesting and diverse society. One example is ‘Yoga’; Yoga is presently practiced by many people in the Australian society as yoga helps one’s self attain mental and physical relief. Although Yoga is practiced by many Australians, Yoga did not originally come from Australia; it was brought to the country by multiculturalism. Yoga originated in India and was passed on to Australia through South Asian immigrants. The immigrants brought their culture to the country and practiced it in Australia due to their beliefs in spiritual peace. People in the Australian society accepted this practice and decided to try it out as it seemed so interesting and relaxing. Presently, it is one of the most practised methods of relaxation in Australia! This shows how the Australian society has adopted and accepted other’s cultures to be part of their own interests, portraying how multiculturalism develops respect and acceptance towards people with different cultures, conclusively, creating a more tolerant, open-minded and diversely educated
