In the comic, “Ms. Marvel,” by Wilson Alphona, Kamala Khan, a sixteen year old high school student struggled with her identity, being a Muslim and an American raised Pakistani. However, in the end she learned that the best version of herself was the best person to be. This comic illustrates many of the critical practices of intersectionality. In Vivian M. May’s essay on intersectionality, she outlines nine “critical practices of creating an intersectional analysis. Intersectionality involves the way people’s experience of gender are created by the crossing of multiple identities like race, ethnicity, social class and etc. coming together. Marvel was about challenging false universals and highlighting omissions built into the social order and intellectual practices. This practice questioned the accuracy of stereotypes and talked about how sometimes important things are often left unsaid. However, the comic mentioned and touched on a lot of stereotypic ideas that are usually associated with Muslim. These stereotypes can lead to either oppression or privilege of individuals. Privilege, “can be defined as advantage people have by virtue of their status or position in the society.” (WV, pg. 54) Some people are privileged but even then their individual privileges vary. Oppression, on the other hand is the unjust treatment of others. It’s a system that discriminates against groups in the forms of racism and classism. In the comic, there was a lot of moments of racism. For example, in one scene where Josh asked Nakia and Kamala to go to a party but was very apprehensive due to false information because he thought that as Muslims t don’t go to parties. Another example of when the challenge false universals is a scene when Zoe commented on Nakia’s hijab questioning if she wore it because she was being pressured to when that was not the case at all.
