Have you ever imagined your boyfriend dying and then coming back to kill you? Well this is not something you usually think about, but it might happen. The author R.L. Stein will take you through this in the book “The Boyfriend”. “The Boyfriend” was first published in 1990. This book is an exciting mystery- fiction book.
This story takes place in various places. The main part of the story takes place in Joanna’s house. Joanna’s house in situated in a fancy community called Middle wood. The houses there were not very close together. Her house is a big white house with a big garden. The house is two stories tall. The story also takes place in a cliff called “The Promontory”. This place is a high cliff at the edge of town. You could see the whole city there. It was best known as a make-out spot. This story takes place during a warm October. This story occurs approximately during the year 2000. During this story about 3 months pass by.
The Main Character of this story is Joanna Collier. She is about 17 years old. She has high cheekbones, perfect straight nose; clear blue eyes open wide, high forehead and sunlight-blond hair. Joanna is a very cruel person. She is also cold and very snobbish. She has some good qualities too. She is smart, funny and pretty. Joanna likes to play tennis in the club, drive her 40,000 dollars BMW and hang around with his boyfriend and friends.

Our class has been reading a book called “Brown Girl Dreaming” for the past two weeks. The author, Jacqueline Woodson talks about her life growing up. For example she talks about how her mom and dad divorced when she was young. She talks about how she moves to Greenville and how her grandpa is like a dad figure, and how her mother came back with a pale skinned baby after she went to New York. Character traits make up a person, and while reading the book, you can see what Jacqueline is like during her childhood. Jacqueline has many character traits, such as being jealous of her older sister, being naive, and she is also respectful.
The protagonist of the story is Ellen. Ellen is thirty-two years old, with limp blond hair and a plain face and whose eyes oozed sympathy. She is also a fifth-grade teacher who has recently left her job after having experienced the embarrassment of a public fight with her partner Roy in front of her colleagues. From the beginning of the story she is frightened, anxious, with head down and shoulders slumped, indicating she has a lot of pain and suffering kept inside her. Doctors have described her as anemic and depressive and she knows that that life she has led so far has contributed for that diagnosis. The protagonist is a dynamic character because although she starts as a person who keeps all her emotions to herself, in the end, she explodes and releases her frustration on Mr. Lercher, the passenger who tried to kill everyone on the airplane. Her change in attitude can be observed when the narrator describes, “ All she knew was that she’d had enough, enough of Roy and this big, drunken testosterone-addled bully and the miserable, crimpled life that awaited her at her mother’s, and she came up out of her seat as if she’d been launched…”
The process of becoming an adult takes more time for children who enjoy freedom. When the kid is still young, one’s parents or guardians would not mind whatever the child does. But when one grows up, one’s hobby and attitude has to change according to one’s age. The Fall of a City is a short story written by Alden Nowlan to illustrate the forced maturation of the 11-year-old child under the influence of his relatives. It is a piece of writing full of pathos, where the protagonist ends up destroying the creation of his childish imagination because of his uncle and aunt’s judgment. Once they discovered what Teddy has been doing up in the attic, he decides to follow the course of his fate. He leaves his imaginary world, where he is the almighty king, to face the much more challenging real world. The Fall of a City is written by Alden Nowlan in order to express his vision of the transition from youth to manhood because of societal pressure, and the hardship is shown through the critique of Teddy’ uncle and aunt about their nephew’s character traits and the diverse conflicts which the protagonist faces within the story.
Jeanette had somewhat of an usual childhood compared to other kids in the United States. Where most kids don’t have to worry about if there are going to school or the money problems that come up, nevertheless Jeannette has to worry. Jeannette have to deal with her self center mother , her eccentricity father , her older sister that does not protect her and her brother that give up almost everything for her. Culver City, is the land of many unique and exciting restaurants, however, if one is looking for delicious inexpensive Mexican food, Titos has one covered. Titos Tacos, is one of my favorite taco stands. Conveniently located on the corner of Washington Place and Venice Blvd, Titos delivers great shredded beef tacos, yummy cheese enchiladas and so much more. Titos is one of my family traditions every time somebody comes back in town, they stop at Titos due to its proximity to LAX. Not only providing nourishing “Soul Food” this taco stand is the definition of inexpensive and excellent Mexican food.

It’s the turn of the 18th century and this Irish immigrant family is poor. Mary is a drunk and her brother, Jimmie drinks and fights with everyone. Maggie doesn’t go to school because everybody has to work. She works in the sweatshop, sewing clothes. Her life is filled with poverty and gloom. Maggie meets Pete and she is impressed that Pete wears nice outfits. Pete likes her too. He takes her to the live theater plenty of times. She’s sees his clothing as a symbol of wealth and that he takes her out to places where she never been before. She sees Pete and the money he spends on her as a way out of her dreary life. She leaves her home and goes to live with Pete to have a better life. She thinks he loves her, but she has gone to devil. Soon after Pete meets Nellie and he dumps Maggie. She has nowhere to go and so she goes home. Her family doesn’t allow her to come back. Mary tells her she is a disgrace and they ridicule her in front of all the neighbors. Even the little children are warned to stay away from her. Maggie leaves with nowhere to go. Pete tells her not to bother him; he doesn’t love her, now he’s in love with Nellie. No one is kind to her and so she begins to walk the streets. She turns to...

Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” and Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” are famous short stories known for there unique setting’s and conflicts. “The Necklace” takes place in Paris, where Matilda Loisel lives with her husband, Mr. Loisel, in a shabby apartment. Mr. Loisel works as a clerk in the office of the Board of Education while Matilda stays home day dreaming about the life she always had pictured herself living. Madame Loisel was not content with her life which eventually led to an even more unfortunate outcome. “The Story of an Hour” has more of a victorian setting where the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard, is well off financially. She receives saddening news that her husband, Brently Mallard, has been killed in a railroad disaster. She takes the news and reflects on her life now feeling a weight lifted off her shoulders. Unexpectedly her husband arrives home and the newfound freedom she felt vanishes. Although both stories differ in setting and conflict, the centering theme of love and marriage in each short story share common characteristics. In both stories the women play a protagonist and struggle with conflicts internally as well as externally.
