Montag’s Journey 451 degrees fahrenheit, the temperature at which paper burns. Guy Montag is a fireman in a future where they start fires rather than put them out. He is tasked with burning books along with the houses in which they are kept. After watching a woman burn herself with her books and the death of his lively teenage neighbor Clarisse, he begins to question everything he believed to be right. To find the answers to these questions and to feel whole again, Montag goes on a journey to see what the books hold within. In the beginning of the story, Montag was a typical fireman. He didn't see anything wrong with the job he had and shared some of the same characteristics as some of the other firemen, like Stoneman and Black. As the story progresses he begins to talk to his neighbor, Clarisse, who starts to inform him of his unhappiness. He denies this at first but starts to realize the emptiness he holds and the fact that he's no longer in love with his wife. This is shown throughout the book and an example of this is shown when he starts to think about his own life and happiness. It shows that Montag really does care about his life and feelings unlike the average citizen in that society who are just slowly losing their sense of self and becoming like everyone else. Montag also begins to collect books and hide them in his vent. Despite the fact that his house can be burned down for holding these books, he continues to collect them so he can try to answer the questions he still
