"In today’s world, technology, social media, and the internet connect everyone in a way that history has never seen before. Information about an event in one part of the world reaches another corner of the globe in a matter of seconds, simply because of the power of the interwebs. With such a prominent and widespread medium of business and communication, however, we as Americans and as citizens of the world must ask ourselves how much our government must interfere with and regulate our usage of this instrument, both in keeping users safe, and making sure it is of greatest benefit to all of us.
There are a number of things we must consider when having a discourse about the extent to which the government should monitor internet activity, but out of all of the main issues pertaining to internet regulation, the most publicized of them (especially recently) is the FCC’s decision on Network Neutrality. It is no secret that cybercrime and cyberterrorism are real. In the world of the internet, cybercriminals and cyberterrorists would never overlook online resources as a means to give themselves an edge. If such criminal activity on the internet has occurred in America, which on at least a minimal level it has, something has to be done about it, given the threat to the nation’s safety and wellbeing that it could have. That “something” could be a government-designed scanning system that scans internet servers for terrorist or criminal activity, or it could be a tracking system that monitors specific people who have shown suspicious activity, or a mixture of both. More than 50% of the world have a form of Internet censorship, and of those countries China, North Korea, Iran, and Vietnam heavily restrict its citizens. This recent topic has reached new heights in the US with the growing number of access to internet. More and more people are debating whether the internet should be censored. Internet censorship is the control or suppression of what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the internet. This would affect everyone and me. Most of these sites would fall in the black list of censoring. A small percentage of users post conspicuous posts, graphic material, and infringing copyright links. To a point where people would be scared to express themselves, or spread information for they might be punished. Even if their opinion is erroneous and maleficent, it’s still that person’s opinion and he’s entitled to it. As companies invest in upgrading their technological capabilities, they too need to invest in security structure to protect their systems and the public from threats of terrorism. The sheer complexity and varying design of attacks often makes it very difficult to create a catch-all defense in fighting terrorism.
