It is very interesting on how the America’s mindset on the Asian American community has changed from yellow peril to model minority in the span of 100 years. I remember my family talking about how Asians are taking over the educational market and the jobs in the USA and accepted it as a fact and backed up the fact due to the cultural values and tiger parenting as one of the major reason. However, after surveying 600 middle and high school children, and the research by Pickerill showed that tiger parenting causes children to lose self-esteem and complicates school adjustment compared to supportive parenting. The obsession for white is mainly observed more in women than men. This ‘aesthetic’ sensibility is just lack of respect for women as individuals. As long as women are treated as objects, they’ll have to swallow the fact that they can only succeed in life if they’re white and slim. Asian Studies course made me to reflect deep as to why blackness is least preferred, why whiteness adds beauty, and whether it is a nature or nurture? No, matter what the answers are, it is very important to reflect up on these questions to make the future better for later
