In this essay, I am going to be discussing the features of Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech, I Have a Dream. Since you likely are familiar with this speech, I am going to skip the semantics of summarizing it. In general, when I first listened to it, I wasn’t sure how to approach with my analysis because I couldn’t identify many of the traditional markers of the African American oral tradition. Upon further examination though I discovered that this speech is far more colorful and in depth than I initially thought. The main feature I noticed was a heavy use of sermon discourse.

This majestic, soul-inspiring address inspired our world and continues to capture our imagination 54 years later.
