Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK Jr.) led the Civil Rights Movement, a non-violent movement led with Christian principles, during a period where human rights were in question and where a cultural shock was occurring, starting with the youth – who were influenced by the Beatles’ music and their emphasis on change through peace and love (non-violent). Due to the Civil Rights Movement occurring after World War II, the definition of human rights was called into question because of the treatment of the Jews. The Jews, like the African Americans, were segregated from their society and not treated in the same manner as the rest of the civilians. He also brings God in as a leader for the Negro community; even if the white moderates or the church will not help, God will be with them. By providing a leader while he is gone, the African Americans can be comforted that they have God helping them to freedom and he will protect them. People like a greater purpose to fight. The white moderates and the white churches may not have found the African Americans a good enough reason to fight, but in section 28 MLK Jr. discusses how this fight for freedom is a fight to preserve Judeo-Christian ideals and return to a true democracy. He gives the skeptics a personal reason to want to join the movement. MLK Jr. is impressively confident, not only in the Civil Rights Movement, but in God. He is confident that God will help to being about their freedom. It is also impressive that MLK Jr. was able to foresee that those who participated in the sit-ins or boycotts would be seen as heroes one day. A lesson to be learned from his letter is that the church is divided in voice. It is hard to have a say in worldly disputes if the organization is divided; nowadays, the main disagreements are about abortion and homosexuality.
