Mise-en-scene of the whole car sequence is fairly grey, looking blander than the world outside. It creates a contrast between the atmosphere in the car and the world outside that has richer and more natural colours. The vibrant colours start to fill the screen when the family starts to lose their way. It also presents that the film is a fantasy film indeed. There comes a long shot of the car driving up the hill. The camera moves up showing us more new things, filling it with more vibrant colours and the music starts to build consistently as well. The film title fades in with a background of an establishing shot, showing us the view of this new place. The father stops right in front of the narrow path through the forest. Like how the piano piece playing on the soundtrack emphasizes the sadness of Chihiro leaving home, Miyazaki shows viewers another reverse emotion in the scene where the father speeds up the car along the bumpy track. The music boosts up as it’s building up the tension of the film and works as a mood establisher here. It demonstrates plenty of unknown waiting for the family right ahead. When the little houses alongside the narrow path of the forest appear, it’s when Miyazaki begins to create a sense of the spiritual world. The mother tells Chihiro: “They’re shrines, some people think little spirits live there.” The little houses demonstrate as a hint of the spiritual world awaiting behind the forest. Chihiro is the only one who notices the strange statue hidden behind the trees, also brings out the reason why she feels anxiety about entering the tunnel. The music stops once the father comes out from the car, directing our attention to the father. Even in a fantasy animated film, it demonstrates the ‘binary oppositions’ suggested by Levi-Strauss (2006:104). The father as a male, acts as a stronger appearance, taking the initiative to enter the tunnel, which the mother and Chihiro show their weaker side, acting hesitantly to find out what on the other side of the
