What is a miscarriage?
In medical terms, miscarriage is a sudden loss of pregnancy, mostly before the 20th week in gestation. If the loss of pregnancy is after the 20th week, it is known as a still birth. Miscarriage is also termed as an abortion. In literal meaning, abortion means ‘end’ of pregnancy.
Often a miscarriage happens in the first trimester (before 12 weeks) of pregnancy. Around 10% to 20% pregnancies end in a miscarriage.

Causes of Miscarriage:
• Mothers who are diabetic or have gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of miscarriage.
• Women with thyroid dysfunction are also at a higher risk.

It happens when tissues of placenta or fetus are expelled from uterus.
Blood clots.

Miscarriage Diagnosis
Miscarriage is diagnosed with an ultrasound
Blood tests for pregnancy hormones.
Complete blood count to check the loss in blood
Pelvic examination
Rh status. An Rh negative woman is given a anti-D injection to prevent future miscarriage

Treating a miscarriage
No specific treatment is known to treat a miscarriage. Women are advised to take complete bed rest after an episode. This will help them recover faster. Body will heal by it’s own and no special treatment is required. However, if there is a severe bleeding from vagina or if you experience a cramp, medication is necessary.
If the leftovers are not expelled from the body, a special procedure is done to remove them from the uterus.
If the abortion was due to an infection, you will be given an antibiotic course to treat it.
And as mentioned earlier, an anti-D injection is given to those expectants who are Rh negative to avoid future miscarriages.
