The Climb by Miley Cyrus is a song that I discovered when I first immigrated to Canada in 2009. Even though I did not know much about the meaning behind the song, I loved the melody and the rhythm. However, as I started understanding english and matured, I would listen to the song again and the lyrics would soothe me. To me, it is a extremely motivational song about the process of reaching your dreams and goals. Which was no strange feeling to me since I turned to music to cope with whatever ailed me, because no matter what, a song, some headphones, and volume turned way too loud was always there. Returning to the supple age of ten, was a disconnect, mainly between the receptors in my brain that determine whether or not I get enough of the happy chemicals, but between what I am, and what I thought I was. I thought I was a kid like everyone else, I would be sad for no reason often, but moving many times, and having to be on my own for a large portion of my early to late teens, I thought it was how life was for most people in my situation. My situation was dreary at best, people bullied me extensively in middle school to high school, in the first string of serious relationships I had they all left because of some arbitrary meaning of what being happy should have been; coming to a peak on Valentines day of 2012, the first time I attempted suicide. Suicide is the focus of the song, how abandonment can lead to hopelessness and desperation to the point of the ultimate act of despair, death. “I guess I finally had the courage to go away. It portrays the theme of standing up and never letting go of what you believe in even if you are facing a number of obstacles. The first line of the song is, “You're broken down and tired of living life on a merry go round…” This line connects with Code Talker because Ned Begay was constantly moved from one island to another like the way the horses move on the merry go round. Not only that, Ned implied that he is sick of war and doesn’t know when it will end. In another verse, it says, “When the silence isn't quiet, and it feels like it's getting hard to breathe, and I know you feel like dying, but I promise we'll take the world to its feet.” This line shows a very relatable connection. In the book, Ned talks about the chaos in war, and how the war machinery made it hard to breathe. Death and corpses were all around him, and during that time he might have felt like he was going to die. Ned Begay and his friends kept hope, belief, and they were able to make it through. They show connection because even if the conditions get too hard, both the text and the lyrics show that you can get back up. In line seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen Hughes says, “Don’t you fall now– For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’.” What Hughes expresses in these lines is that just because the stairs become hard to climb at times do not quit. One of Hughes’ most important elements is symbols in his poem “Mother to Son.” She still struggles forward, no matter what may have been the bleakest moments of her life, where there seemed to be no hope. When climbing the stairs she is “reachin’ landin’s, / and turnin’ corners, / and sometimes goin’ in the dark”. Even though these are “home like” things someone may face on a staircase, they are actually metaphors that mean things that she has encountered in her life. She says that she reaches landings, which can mean that she has come up on places where she could rest. When she says she turns corners, it is when her life changes and she has to turn away from her original path that it was on. When she says “sometimes goin’ in the dark where there ain’t been no light.” This contrasting color imagery of dark and light shows the idea that it is always dark before the dawn and bad days come before better ones and just when it might seem as if there is no relief in sight, something occurs to get rid of all of your burdens.
