Over the years, there have been laws passed to benefit immigrants, but some have laws have done nothing. Back in the 1960's there was Act that was passed that accepted all immigrants of all nationalities on a roughly equal basis. From reading 'America's Shifting Views in Immigration,' I found out information that the U.S. was willing to accept immigrants. In 'America's Shifting Views on Immigration,' author Mike Kubic states that "In 1965, another seminal measure, the Immigration and Nationality Act, for the first time committed the United States to accepting immigrants of all nationalities on a roughly equal basis." As the hostility toward immigrants had begun to relax, the residency period was reduced to two years by 1824. More reforms were made over several decades, and by 1870 new legislation gave persons of African descent, Asians and other non-white groups access to citizenship. Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants, legal and illegal, from around the world, come to the United States. These immigrants come because they want a chance at a better life; others are refugees, escaping persecution and civil wars in their home country. Many people believe the United States is the best place to go. There is more freedom, protection, and benefits, which seems like a good deal to immigrants. But the large number of immigration is affecting the current citizens of the United States. Taxpayers are forced to pay for the welfare and schooling for many of these immigrants, some who are illegal aliens. Some citizens believe that immigration can be hazardous to the environment. Others blame crime, poverty, and overpopulation on immigration. About sixty-eight million immigrants have been added to the United States since 1970, and it is estimated that 130 million people will be added over the next fifty years. The government has tried somewhat to restrict immigration but the laws are still too lenient. Nearly every other advanced country in the world is moving quickly towards stabilized population or has already achieved it. The United States is moving towards it very slowly. This country would have to reduce immigration down to 255,000 a year to do this (Beck 1). If nothing is done to stabilize the immigration to this country, what will become of population in the next decade? The population will continue to grow even faster - not due to births, but to massive immigration to this country. Immigration can become a serious problem to this country if the government does not produce stricter laws.
In the United States, the cliché of a nation of immigrants is often invoked. Indeed, very few Americans can trace their ancestry to what is now the United States, and the origins of its immigrants have changed many times in American history. Despite the identity of an immigrant nation, changes in the origins of immigrants have often been met with resistance. What began with white, western European settlers fleeing religious persecution morphed into a multicultural nation as immigrants from countries across the globe came to the U.S. in increasing numbers. Like the colonial immigrants before them, these new immigrants sailed to the Americas to gain freedom, flee poverty and famine, and make a better life for themselves. Forgetting their origins as persecuted and excluded people, the older and more established immigrants became possessive about their country and tried to exclude and persecute the immigrant groups from non-western European backgrounds arriving in the U.S. This hostile, defensive, and xenophobic reaction to influxes of “new” immigrants known as Nativism was not far out of the mainstream. Nativism became a part of the American cultural and political landscape and helped to shape, through exclusion, the face of the United States for years to come.
Though immigration is not a new phenomenon in the world’s history, it has been notice that now days immigration has increased more than ever. This is mainly caused because of better ways of communication and transportation, which it makes it possible to people to move and enter other countries. However there are many types of immigrations such as economical, retirement immigrants or even ‘natural disasters’ immigrants. People sometimes seek a new life to save themselves from poverty and misery, thus they decide to enjoy the benefits of another country. Still there are other immigrants who are forced to leave their countries because of wars or even natural disasters, such as the tsunami in Japan 2011. Some philosophers consider closed borders to restrict people freedom of movement and that global justice is been violated. On the other hand Miller and other philosophers argued that immigration causes more disadvantages than advantages into the country they enter. Also they agree that states have a moral right to limit immigrations in order to prevent any changes in their culture, as immigration affects several things, even if this means that they will violate human rights. Another concern for the states is the welfare state where sometimes it may be limited and countries cannot afford any immigrants. However, is it right to oppose people rights of freedom, or is it correct for states to limit immigration?
Immigration has always, and will always, be an essential part of America’s demographic and cultural diversity. Our country was founded on the immigration of Europeans to the New World. Without them our nation would not be as advanced as it is today. Over the past three centuries, America’s immigration policies have evolved, both positively and negatively. Although we are moving forward, several episodes in our country’s immigration policy have targeted and attacked certain ethnic or cultural groups.
America is known famously throughout the world with the nickname 'The melting pot.' The reason behind this is that America is extremely diverse and has many different people. Immigrants give America the chance to know the culture of many countries. They bring in their culture, religion, economic benefits, and ideology to America. I believe that the United States should allow legal immigrants from all over the world because they bring many benefits to it. Immigrants are a positive influence on United States of America.

We are in a melting pot era where the impossible was made possible. From the time John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960, making a promise to change the national origins system to unite the nations of all countries equally. Hence, in 1965, under Lyndon Johnson’s administration, Kennedy’s promise came into light, amending the INS—favoring unification of families, not national origins. Although, the unification was made possible, the peacefulness never lasted.
Immigration is a major part of what defines America. Today, more than 42.4 million Americans are immigrants. These immigrants were allowed to come to America because of a certain established immigration policy, particularly the Immigration Act of 1965. The Immigration Act of 1965 continues to dominate US immigration policy even today. This Act was created at the same time of the Civil Rights Movement where minorities fought for their voice and sparked much controversy. While some people reacted negatively at the passing of the Act, many people thought of the 1965 Immigration Act as a part of the Civil Rights Movement since it abolished the Quota System.
Immigrants have been threw out history and still follow today. In the past decades immigrants have had many hardships especially undocumented immigrants. The majority of the immigrants in the United States are undocumented immigrants. Before the the late 1800s there was no federal laws that regulated immigration. In that century immigrants were growing in population and were in need of a job. If an immigrant was suspected of being a dangerous criminal the government would step in and deport that person. The first federal law to restrict immigration was formed in 1882 called The Chinese Exclusion Act. This act made a passageway for more immigration restrictions on particular groups of people. The act would later be repealed in 1943 because it was discriminatory. In the beginning of the 20th century a Quota act was passed to regulate immigration more precisely by country. By the 1920s the population was made up of 13% foreign born. In 1940s the Bracero program was established for millions of Mexican farmworkers to come to the U.S to work in agriculture. The program was meant to give mexican immigrants a chance to work and be able to go back to their homeland, but instead they were being abused and not getting good wages for their work. Today in the 21st century not much has been done to help immigrants. For instance, Arizona CA was trying to pass a law that was called SB 1070 which stated if a police officer suspect of a driver being an undocumented immigrant based on skin color the officer would be able to stop and possibly deport that person. Fortunately SB 1070 was not passed as a law. Our former president Barack Obama has been able to do little for immigrants.
