INDEPTH (2008) defines migration as the movement of people across a specified boundary for the purpose of establishing a new or semi-permanent residence. For decades in Jamaica, migration is thought to be a way of improving family life with many able bodied persons trying to pursue jobs in other countries where the dollar is stronger. Over the years, a trend started to develop where children were unable to attend school because the education system was far too expensive and some families were not in a suitable position to address the financial situation. The Jamaican economy benefits vastly from migration baring the fact that it’s most skilled set of people prefer to seek jobs in other countries rather than in their own. Once their citizen start working investment becomes an option to set up businesses, schools and hospitals, so over time the economy will grow and become more productive. Families also benefit from this in a sense that if it were not for migration poverty and unemployment would be prevalent. Jobs are vastly created because of the excess funding being deposited in the Jamaican economy. The Great Migration started in 1910 and continued through 1930. It was a period in time which saw 1.6 million African Americans relocate from the southern states to the northern states(AAME). There are four main which contributed to this occurring. The first was better and more skilled job opportunities available in the north. Many blacks were not allowed to work or hold high paying jobs in the South. The second was the oppression of African Americans in the South. They were treated very poorly and were often victims of racism and crime at a much higher rate than in the Northern states. The third was they wanted to have the right to vote. During 1910-1970 the great migration was taking place, which was the movement of southern African American’s to the north/northern cities. The great migration was an event that seemed as if it was unstoppable and that it was going to happen. In the South African American’s faced racial discrimination, sharecropping, bad working conditions, low wages, racial segregation and political detriments. This is all supported by documents 1-4. For instance, for an immigrant moving is not an easy thing to do they will have to leave everything behind and start over again in a whole different country than their own native country. The parents will have to look for a house and also look for a job to support their family and learn how to survive in what seems like a different world. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences in geography, climate, tradition, and economy between the two countries, Jamaica and the United States of America are extensive.
United States and Jamaica have many similarities such as they were both under British rule for several years, and they both elect officials to govern the country.
